He returned home to help his mother and younger brothers and sisters. He went to work at Watkins Motor Company in Emporia with his Uncle George and Uncle William. He was drafted in 1942 and served at Sedalia Army Air Base in South Dakota. He had bought Uncle George's share of Watkins Motor Co. before 1942 and bought Uncle William's shares after the War. Clayton became president of the company and ran it with his brother David. He was president when he died 14 may 1966 of cancer. He is buried in the Emporia Cemetery in the James M. Watkins plot.
