Mrs. Hulstein was born in the Netherlands on January 12, 1894, the daughter of Evert Vermeer and Gertrude Rickers. At the age of 16 she came to America. She was united in marriage on December 23, 1914, to Cornelius G. Hulstein, and to this union ten children were born. All of her married life was spent in Sioux Center, except for two years spent at Hawarden. Survivors include the widower and eight children: Gerrit of Sheldon; Gertrude (Mrs. Albert Brunsting) of Hawarden; Edward of Fort Atkinson, Wisc.; Raymond of Sioux City; Cornelia (Mrs. John Wiersma) and Esther (Mrs. Henry Lems) both of Fort Atkinson, Wisc.; Harold of Lake Park, Ia.; and Shirley (Mrs. Darrell Hartman) who is staying at home. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren; two brothers, Case Vermeer of Rock Valley and Henry Vermeer of Sumas, Wash.; and one sister, Mrs. Hattie Brunsting, of Hull. Preceding Mrs. Hulstein in death were her parents, one daughter (who died in infancy), a son, Harold (sixteen months), four grandchildren, one sister (Mrs. Wm. Lockhorst), and one brother, John Vermeer. Mrs. Hulstein was a member of the Bethel Christian Reformed church. Sioux Center News 1958-08-28.
