MARION - Clem Ham, 84, died at his home in Marion, South Carolina, December 16, 2017, after a long illness. Clem was born on May 23, 1933 to parents Dr. Clem Ham and Sarah Bellinger Patterson Ham in Goldsboro, North Carolina. He lived in Monroe, North Carolina for most of his young life. He began his college studies at the Citadel before entering the Korean Conflict, then graduating from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina. Clem completed a Duke Endowment residency program in Hospital Administration, a new field at the time, at Charlotte Memorial Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. At Charlotte Memorial Hospital he met and then married his wife of 56 years, Nan Elisabeth Scarborough of Greenville, SC. Clem began his career as Administrator of Bamberg County Memorial Hospital in Bamberg, South Carolina, then becoming associate director of Park View Hospital in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He was Vice-President of Hospital Operations for Medicenters of America, headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee. Mr. Ham and his family returned to South Carolina in 1979, at which time he assumed the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Laurens County Health Care System, Laurens, South Carolina. He was also at the time Administrator of Bailey Memorial Hospital in Clinton, and Administrator of the Laurens County Hospital District. He was instrumental in the construction of a new modern hospital replacing the two. He later assumed the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Marion County Hospital District, Marion, South Carolina, a position he held until his retirement in 2001. He was administrator of both The Marion Hospital and the Mullins Hospital before the merger of the two, becoming one of the largest employers in the county. Mr. Ham was a pioneer in the creation of revolutionary new facilities in the State which reduced duplications of equipment, services, and staff. He became a leader in the field of providing dynamic medical institutions in the communities in which he worked and lived and served as resource to others navigating complex changes in the medical community. Mr. Ham received numerous awards during his professional career. He was most proud of his fellowship awarded by American College of Healthcare Administrators of which he was a member. He was awarded the REGENTS AWARD by the American College of Healthcare Executives in 1997 for his many contributions to his profession and the advancement of new health care models. The Clem P. Ham scholarship in business administration, concentrating in health care management was established at Lander University in his name. In 1997 he was awarded the Order of the Palmetto, The State’s highest civilian service award as an exemplification of a True Palmetto Gentlemen. Mr. Ham was a Member of the Board of Directors of the Marion County Healthcare Foundation, charged with the mission of improving the quality of life in Marion County through inspired philanthropy, grants, and innovative community programs. Mr. Ham was a member of the Board of Trustees of the South Carolina Hospital Association, a Charter member of the Palmetto Community Health Network, and former Chair of the Health Executives Group of the Pee Dee. He was a member of the Lions Club of Rocky Mounty, and the Rotary Clubs of Laurens and Mullins, South Carolina. Mr. Ham was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Marion, South Carolina and served as an Elder in its ministry. Clem is survived by his wife, Nan Elisabeth Scarborough Ham of the home; daughters, Sarah Kay Ham Bryce (James) of Chatham, Massachusetts, and Jordan Bay, Nova Scotia, Elisabeth Patterson Ham Clauber (Thomas) of Marion and Kimberly Scarborough Ham of Rock Hill; sister, Elise Ham DesPortes of Hartsville; and 5 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Charles Edmund Ham. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 19th at the First Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Marion. The Reverend Thomas Langston will officiate. Private burial services will be held at St. James Cemetery, Burnt Branch Road, New Zion, South Carolina. - Richardson Funeral Home
