SEYMOUR TRIBUNE OBITUARY 08/03/2011. Cleo Stephenson, 87, Salem, passed away Monday, Aug. 1, 2011, at Meadow View Health Care Center, Salem. Mr. Stephenson graduated from Campbellsburg High School in 1941. He was the former owner of Smedley Farm Supply and a farmer while working at National Ag Under Writers Crop Insurance. He was the area's claim specialist for the Indiana NAU. He served on the former Washington County Memorial Hospital Board for 28 years, serving a term as president. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II, going to the Philippines and the Army of Occupation in Japan. He was a member of Westview Christian Church, serving as elder, and the Pekin American Legion. Born April 20, 1924, in Vernon Township, he was the son of Wilbur and Mabel Chastain Stephenson, both of whom preceded him in death. On May 30, 1943, he married the former Garnelle Johns Stephenson, who survives, and they enjoyed 68 years together. Besides his wife, he is survived by his son, James K. Stephenson, Seymour; daughter, Suzanne Abbott, Jeffersonville; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Juanita Hancock, Muncie; several nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Westview Christian Church. Burial will follow at Mount Tabor Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Weathers Funeral Home, Salem.
