Like all young boys growing up in rural South Dakota, he spent countless hours helping on the farm and playing many softball games with friends and cousins. He began his education in a one room school house, District #66. he often liked to tell his kids stories of going to school with a horse and buggy. Dad went on to graduate High School from Freeman Academy in 1944. In 1945 Cleon was granted Civilian Public Service Status. He began his Civilian Public Service at the end of World War ii, during this time he was first stationed in Idaho, then Colorado with the Forest Service and at Kings View Mental health hospital in Reedley, California. He spent some time in Voluntary Service before returning to South Dakota and continued his education at Freeman Jr. College. After returning home, Dad settled in Sioux Falls where he worked for Sioux Falls Book and Stationary. It was there that he met his life mate, our mother Marjorie. They were married in 1959 and settled on the Graber family farm to begin their life together. From their union they were blessed with two children, Teresa and Linden. During his younger married years, Dad spent hours playing softball with the East Freeman Blues. Early in our childhood memories Dad was forever collecting spark plugs, gas engines, old cars and antique motorcycles. He loved anything old and unique, and he loved the stories that went with the relics of the past. Mom and Dad continued to farm until 1991, at that time they moved into Freeman. Dad continued to be very active. He served as the Freeman Museum Curator for many years and enjoyed going to Many auction sales. Dad was a lifelong member of the Salem-Zion Mennonite Church; he was baptized into the Christian Faith in 1943 by Rev. J.J. Regier. He took an active role in the church and was a member of the Men's Chorus for many years. Dad passed away May 5th, 2014 at the Tieszen Memorial home in Marion SD. he was 88 years old. Cherishing his memory are his daughter, Teresa and husband, Jim Dick; his son, Linden and wife, Judy Graber; grandchildren, Jared and wife, Michelle Dick, Jordan Dick, Lawson Graber and Lexi Graber; one brother, O'Ray and wife, Edith Graber; one sister, Rita Graber; special nieces and nephews; and a host of cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie; his parents and brother-in-law Palmer Graber.
