Cleora was born on Aug. 26, 1914, in Elgin, Ill., daughter of Ernest and Lucille (Boyer) Wean. She graduated from high school in Chicago and in 1939 graduated from the Finley School of Nursing in Dubuque. She married Robert A. Hawkins on Feb. 25, 1941, in Center Grove; he preceded her in death on Feb. 25, 1998. Cleora was employed at The Finley Hospital in Dubuque, at the former John McDonald Hospital in Monticello, and later as a nurse for Western Dubuque Schools, until her retirement in 1968. She was a member of the Cascade Presbyterian Church, the Eastern Star and the Ladies Aide Society. Cleora was a true city girl that adapted well to the country life that she lived for 57 years, and she also was a great caregiver. Surviving are three sons, Charles (Joanne) Hawkins and David (Marilyn) Hawkins, both of Cascade, and Frederick (Marilyn) Hawkins, of Mount Ayr; a daughter, Roberta (Roy) Hayes, of Roswell, N.M.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Cleora and Robert also provided a foster home to many children over the years, and during that time had a foster child, Angie (Kenny) Sauser, who was at that time and still is part of the family. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Muriel Welinski; and a brother-in-law, George Welinski. A Cleora G. Hawkins Memorial Fund has been established.
