She was 89 years old. Cletus was born at home on a farm on March 22, 1929 near Bellwood, NE. She was the first born of four girls to her parents, Marie Elenora (Sims) Zwiener and Emil Joseph Zwiener. Raised on the farm, she grew up with a love for the soil, gardening, flowers and also secured the consummate skills of a seamstress, cook, canner, and hostess. She graduated from Columbus High School in 1946 and attended one year of college at Kearney State College. She taught school near her parents’ homestead, in a one room country school house, before marrying. She married the love of her life, Frank Michael Swanda, on May 18, 1949 in St. Bonaventure Church in Columbus, Nebraska. They met on a blind date arranged by Cletus’s best friend, who was dating one of Frank’s lifelong best friends. Over the 69 years of their married life, Cletus would frequently say that, she had met a lof men, but none better than Frank. Cletus delved into the roles of motherhood, faithful supporter of her husband, and loyal friend. She raised four children, Delton (1950-2014), Carol (1958), Dean (1959), and Carma (1961). She helped support the family financially by being a waitress, while also encouraging the children’s activities and interests, such as piano lessons, ballet lessons, girl scouts (she was a Girl Scout leader), boy scouts, debate club, and 4-H horse club. Later in life, she was a Meals on Wheels volunteer, visited friends in nursing homes, and provided respite relief for a member of her church, who was caring for an ailing spouse. At various times in her adult life, Cletus was also active in church and other faith-related women’s activities. Faith was always an important aspect of Cletus’s life. She was raised a Catholic and remained a practicing Catholic all of her life. She sought to instill Catholic values in her children. In her late forties, however, Cletus had a special encounter with Jesus Christ, where he became her personal savior. She had a “born again” experience. She was never the same. Together, she and Frank started attending a Bible study to learn more about their God. She also prayed continually for the salvation and well-being of her children and grandchildren. Even in her last days, the Sunday Missal sat on the end table next to her chair in which she sat. She was a woman of faith until the end. Cletus was preceded in death by her parents, Marie (Sims) Zwiener and Emil Zwiener, and one son, Delton M. Swanda. She is survived by her husband, Frank M. Swanda, Fremont, NE; two daughters, Carol A. Swanda, Fremont, NE and Carma M. Plessing (jerry Plessing), Kennard, NE; one son, Dean M. Swanda, Arlington, TX; five grandchildren; one great grandchild; and sisters, Gabriel Zwiener, Rochester, MN, Alyce Bauer, Lincoln, NE and Dona Kaminski, Maryville, MO. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, July 31, 2018 2018 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont. Visitation will be Monday 5 PM to 8 PM with a Rosary at 7 PM at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery in Fremont.
