He was born with Epidermolysis Bullosa, a group of rare, inherited skin diseases characterized by recurring painful blisters and open sores, often in response to minor trauma, as a result of the usually fragile nature of the skin. But looking past what is wrong with a person and seeing who they are, was the message Benenhaley brought to the students. I have a lot of things wrong with me, and there are a lot of things that I cant do, he said. âBut there are a lot of things I can do. He suffers from Epidermolysis Bullosa, a group of rare, inherited skin diseases characterized by recurring painful blisters and open sores. To thank Benenhaley for the inspiration he gave them, Alice Drive students raised more than $5,000 to give him his dream vacation to New York City. Principal Bill Coon said this was the school first spontaneous, student-led fund-raiser. Students surprised Benenhaley at an assembly on Monday. During the ceremony, he was moved to tears as the students gave him an all-expense paid trip to New York, which included airfare, hotel accommodations, tickets to watch a live taping of the cooking show Emeril Live, a cooking show, and plenty of extras.
