He is survived by two daughters, Linda (Terry) Boop and Kim Archer of Lakeview, four grandchildren: Melissa Pellegrini of Spencerville, Stephanie (Nick) Gnau of Northville, Michigan, C. Trent (Jessica) Boop of Venedocia, and Chase (Nicole) Archer of Ada, and 13 great grandchildren. Also a brother Elmer Hanes, and a brother-in-law Edwin Downing, both of rural Lima, several nieces and nephews, and a friend and caregiver Eddie Dapore. In addition to his wife Helen, he was preceded in death by an infant son, David Eugene Hanes, two brothers, Harold and Russell Hanes, and a sister, Mildred Downing. Cliff graduated from Shawnee High School in 1940, and had regularly attended their class reunion, most recently last September. Cliff and his siblings grew up working on the family farm. While helping another farmer, he suffered and survived a tragic farming accident at age 19, losing his right leg. Many months later after being fitted with a prosthesis, he resumed a normal life, this being nothing short of a miracle, considering medical knowledge of the time. After graduating from Northwestern Business College, he worked in the engineering department at Lima Locomotive, which became BLH, and finally Clark Equipment, from where he retired. Always an avid fisherman he thoroughly enjoyed his life at Indian Lake, fishing and visiting with his friends on the island. In 2011 he caught a 15.5 inch Crappie earning him a Fish Ohio Award. In their 58 years of marriage he and his wife Helen, whom he affectionately referred to as "mommy", traveled extensively, visiting Europe, Hawaii, and going on a cruise to Mexico, plus visiting several continental states, often times with their camper in the Good Sam Club. Being avid Reds fans, they followed the ball club around the country several times with the Reds rooters of the Lima area. He and Helen bowled in several senior leagues, and at age 63 he bowled a 279, compiling 11 strikes in a row, all with one leg. He wore the jacket proudly that he received from Northland Lanes, until it was in tatters. He was a lifelong member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Cridersville. His mother's family was instrumental in the original founding of the church and the town of Cridersville. Though unable to attend there in recent years he did enjoy attending Zion Lutheran in Lima with his family. He had also been a member the Lima Eagles. Cliff had a kind word for everyone and never meant a stranger. He had a "down home" sense of humor and could do almost anything with the right tools. He will be sadly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him. Friends may call 3-8 Wednesday at Bayliff & Son Funeral Home, Cridersville. A celebration of life will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday with Rev. Kent Wilson officiating, burial will follow at St. Matthew Cemetery, Cridersville.
