"Shorty" Donovan, 91, of Epworth, formerly of rural Bernard, passed away at 12:55 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at the home of his son, Patrick Donovan. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 13, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Epworth, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating and the Rev. Joseph McDermott, SVD. concelebrating. Assisting deacons will be James Kean and Gerald Koopmann. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Fillmore. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Epworth, where there will be a wake service at 3 p.m. Shorty was born on Aug. 9, 1920, in Bernard, son of Francis and Irene (McCarthy) Donovan. He received his education at Sacred Heart Schools in Fillmore. He was married to Lucille McCarthy on Aug. 28, 1946, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Garryowen. Shorty enjoyed farming and raising black Angus cattle for many years in the Bernard area. He was especially proud when Pat showed the Grand Champion beef at the Dubuque County Fair. Above all else, he enjoyed spending time with his family and hearing or telling a good story whether it was true or not. Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Lucille Donovan; his children, Patrick (Catherine) Donovan, of Bernard, Sharon (Larry) McDermott, of Dubuque, Janet (Jim) Hanks, of West Des Moines, and Phyllis (Fred) Urbain, of Placid; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Maurice Connolly; and a sister-in-law, Jean Donovan, all of Cascade. He was preceded in death by his parents; a twin brother, Cletus; a sister and brother-in-law, Lou Mae and Dominic English; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Ardella and Eddie Leonard, Leslie and Helen McCarthy, Vern and Rita McCarthy, Lloyd and Velma McCarthy; and nephews, Tom Donovan and Jeffrey Connolly.
