Cliff was born July 1, 1919, in Hettinger (Adams County), North Dakota, to Cecil Earl Hathaway (1893 - 1973) and Lena (born Leverson) Hathaway (1889 - 1973). On June 9, 1944 at Bison, Cliff was united in marriage to May Christine (born Ruby) Hathaway, who was born July 20, 1922, in Newell, SD. May was the youngest in a family of twelve born to Richard Frederick "Fred" and Adele (born Schmale) Ruby. Cliff and May began their life together on Cliff's parents' farm where they spent eleven years of happiness together. Their first born, a real little girl, all their own was born on October 24, 1946. They named her Bonita Mae "Bonnie". Then three years later their very own little son, Dennis Leroy was born on November 4, 1949. Their dream family was now complete. They went all over the prairie, the four of them, checking cattle and sheep, crops and fences. They had gardens, went visiting and playing cards with friends. The ranch life was good and provided very fond memories of happy times on the ranch. Cliff was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Due to his health, he and May sold the ranch and moved to Buffalo. Keeping Cliff in their fondest memories are his son, Dennis Hathaway and special friend Linda Anders, Mud Butte, SD; his daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Virgil Otterberg, Lemmon, SD; 5 grandchildren, Jeffrey Otterberg and his wife Debbie; Nikole and her husband Robby Tennant; Dustin Otterberg and his wife Shani; Kelly and her husband Denton McGregor, and Brady Hathaway; 10 great grandchildren, TyAnn, Chance, and Kaden Otterberg; Hope, Ashley, Beth, Riley and Gracie Mae Tennant; Sydney and Foster Otterberg; 1 sister-in-law, Emma L. (born Ruby) Willey, Roseburg, OR. Burial in Greenhill Cemetery.
