Description	:	The Bible of Clinton's daughter Sallie Pierce Butler has his birth year as 1845 rather than 1842. Clinton and three of his brothers, Thomas, John and James are veterans of the Civil War. They fought for the Union. Clinton was a private in Co. B., 8th Tenn. Cav. Clinton was married twice, first to Elizabeth Carroll Ellison on Christmas Day 1866. He and Elizabeth had seven children. She died two months short of their 30th anniversary. Clinton was married twice, first to Elizabeth Carroll Ellison on Christmas Day 1866. He and Elizabeth had seven children. She died two months short of their 30th anniversary. All of their children, except for one daughter, grew up, married and raised their own families in the county where their father was born. They were the fourth generation of Pierces to live in Campbell County. After Elizabeth's death Clinton remained a widower for about six years. He married Minnie Sweat on June 10, 1901. (His son Hauk married Minnie's sister, Vernia.) During their 20 years of marriage, Clinton and Minnie raised two daughters, Irene and Myrtle. Tragically, the sisters died from injuries received when an escaped convict broke into their home and brutally beat the elderly women. Irene died at the scene and Myrtle died two days later.
