Description	:	Cloyce Darrell Fischer was born January 30, 1927, in Woodbine, Iowa to Louis and Jessie (Messenger) Fischer. He grew up near Woodbine and attended Douglas Hill Country School and then Woodbine High School. He helped his father farm. On October 9, 1950 he was drafted into the US Army. He served in the 160th regiment of the 40th infantry division. As a medic he served as a litter bearer and an aide man while... Read More	Cloyce Darrell Fischer was born January 30, 1927, in Woodbine, Iowa to Louis and Jessie (Messenger) Fischer. He grew up near Woodbine and attended Douglas Hill Country School and then Woodbine High School. He helped his father farm. On October 9, 1950 he was drafted into the US Army. He served in the 160th regiment of the 40th infantry division. After training at Camp Cooke, California he was sent to Japan for several months and then to combat in Korea, where he served as a medic. As a medic he served as a litter bearer and an aide man while spending much of his time above the front lines on outpost. He was discharged on October 13, 1952 and he and his fiancée, Helen Miller were married on November 9, 1952 at the Woodbine United Methodist Church. The couple farmed south of Woodbine. He took great pride in raising hogs. Cloyce retired from farming in 1991 and moved into town. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren activities, especially watching their ballgames, music programs and recitals. He enjoyed taking the grandchildren camping. Cloyce and Helen loved to camp and travel. Cloyce found great pleasure in planning their various road trips. He was a member of Woodbine's First United Methodist Church, and he served as a trustee and usher. He also took care of the snow removal at the church for many years. Coley was Cloyce's favorite dog. Cloyce died on June 16, 2004 at his home in Woodbine after a long struggle with cancer at the age of 77 years, four months and 17 days. Cloyce was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister and an infant daughter. He is survived by Helen, his wife of over 51 years; three children Mary and her husband Joseph Hodapp of Alleman, Iowa, Stephen Fischer and his wife Christine of Omaha, Nebraska, Jeannette Fischer of Woodbine, Iowa; three grandchildren Andrew and Kaitlyn Fischer and Jennifer Hodapp; and many other relatives and friends.
