Clyde Arthur Nickols was the sixth of the seven children of Margaret Jane (née Zuck) and Abner Welton Nickols, born in 1876 in Sand Creek Township, Union County, Iowa. The Nickols family arrived in Union County in 1868, and was farming in county's Sand Creek Township in the 1870 and 1880 U.S. Censuses, and the 1885 and 1895 Iowa state census. Clyde A. Nickols and Miss Mary Tompkins were married on 22 July 1899 in Saint Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri, where both then resided. The couple, with daughter Albert, born in June 1899, were enumerated in 1900 in Saint Joseph. (The couple claimed to have been married for 2 years.) In the preceding household were Mary's parents, Rebecca and John H. Thompkins. Clyde A. Nickols, age 24, was working as a candy maker; John H. Tompkins, age 60, was a day laborer. Three more children of Mary and Clyde Nickols were born in Missouri, before the family moved around 1905 to Klickitat County, Washington, evidently with the intention of homesteading. Enumerated in 1910 in Fruit Valley Precinct, Klickitat County, Mary and Clyde Nickols were farming. On 3 May 1911, Clyde A. Nickols was issued the patent for 160 acres of Federal land in Klickitat County under the Homestead of Act of 1862. He had resided on the land for at least 5 years, improved it, and paid a small registration fee. The Nickols family was farming in 1920 in Klickitat County, and in 1930 in Malheur County in southeastern Oregon. By 1940, Mary and Clyde Nickols had returned to Klickitat County, where he was employed as a cemetery caretaker. Notes Full name and birth date from WWI draft registration card (see below). In an 1876 Sand Creek Township Directory, A. Nickols farmed 50 acres in Section 9. He was born in Ohio, and had arrived in Union County, Iowa, in 1868. His post office was Afton, as it was for almost all the township residents. (Illustrated Centennial Sketches, Map and Directory of Union County, Iowa (Creston, Iowa: C. J. Colby, 1876), p. 120.) In the 1870 enumeration of the Nickols family, their post office was Afton, in neighboring Union Township. Afton was reported as birth place on Clyde Arthur Nickols' death certificate (which has the same full name and birthdate as the draft registration card). Clyde Arthur Nickols registered for the draft on 12 Sep 1918 in Klickitat Co., Washington. He was age 42, born on 27 May 1876, resided in White Salmon, Klickitat Co., and employed as a farmer in Bingen, Klickitat Co. His nearest relative was Mary Nickols of the same address.
