TEXT OF NEWS ITEM: (August 11, 1943) CLYDE WHITAKER OF GREENVILLE, ENOREE KILLED Air Base Soldier, Former Clifton Resident, Dies in Auto Accident Clyde Whitaker, 35, based at Greenville army air base with the 35th service group, U.S. army air forces, died at Greenville Monday night from injuries received in an auto accident Sunday. He was on his way home from the Greenville air base at the time of the accident. Mr. Whitaker was born and reared af Clifton, where he had lived a greater part of his life. For the past three years he had lived at Enoree. He entered service on March 8, 1943. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lovie Whitaker; five children, Loree, Jean, Betty, Clyde and Charles Edward Whitaker; one brother, Andrew Whitaker of Enoree; five sisters, Mrs. Jessie Thornton of Converse, Mrs. Lois Vaughan of Clifton, Mrs. Lottie Wyatt of Gaffney, Mrs. Ruth Puckett of Gaffney and Mrs. Elmer Emory of Clifton; and a half-brother, Irwin Whitaker, Jr., of Pacolet. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the M.W. Bobo Funeral chapel. The body will be at the home of Mrs. Lois Vaughan in Clifton after 4 o'clock this afternoon. TEXT OF OBITUARY: (August 12, 1943) CLYDE WHITAKER Clyde Whitaker, 35, based at the Greenville army air base with the 35th service group, U.S. army air forces, died at Greenville Monday night from injuries received in an auto accident Sunday. He was on his way home from the Greenville air base at the time of the accident.
