He proposed by mail and sent her bus fare to San Diego, CA where he was a civilian aircraft mechanic at North Island Naval Air Station. They were unable to wed in CA due to her age (17) so they hopped the bus and went to Cupid's Corner, in Yuma, AZ, where they were legally wed, 12-14-1941. Pop, as we boys called him, was mostly a traveling salesman, insurance, siding, advertising specialties, Goodyear retail, a country store in NE, hearing aids, and real estate. He was an excellent mechanic and maintained his own cars over the years, left Mom with two Cadillacs when died at 58. He suffered his first heart attack immediately after his father's funeral in 1972, survived five more and open heart surgery with a stroke, but the 7th and last attack took him from us. He was the family clown, like his father before him. Pop went back to college after we both had left home, and he finished a BA degree at 44, at Fort Lewis College, Durango, CO, where he was also #3 man on the college golf team, the oldest varsity athlete in school history. He and son Larry made Who's Who In American Colleges in 1966. Mom worked hard thru his many heart ailments as a checker at King Soopers in Colorado Springs and Boys Market in Durango. Her insurance at work kept them afloat in the hard times. She passed in 1989, at age 65. (cancer) They had 3 grand children and 3 great grand children.
