He leaves only 2 surviving children, one of whom is Mr. Thomas Butler, a committee clerk of the House of Delegates, and Mrs. Mary F. Roberts wife of Mr. Wm G. Roberts. His daughter and her husband were with him when he died. Col. Butler's other children were David Butler and Mrs. Hannah Glenn, wife of the late Thomas Glenn and the mother of Mrs. Frank B. Macatee, of this county. Col. Butler's remains were buried at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Deer Creek, on Thurs, Rev. Father Conway officiating. Col. Butler was one of the few survivors of what the grandfathers of the present generation termed the "late war"--the war of 1812-'14. It is safe to say that no braver soldier leveled a musket or drew a saber in that memorable episode in our country's history, and no more patriotic heart than Col. Butler's ever beat in any bosom. He was equally distinguished for all the kindly traits of humanity which win for their possessor the esteem and affection of his fellows.. He was warm-hearted, generous and humane, and his hospitality, which was that of a Md gentleman of the old regime, was freely and graciously dispensed. We are indebted to Mr. Wm. Young, of the Bel Air bar, for the following sketch of his life, the facts having been furnished to Mr. Young by Col. Butler himself, a year or two ago: Col. Clement Butler was born in Harford County on the 9th of May, 1796, at the "Belle Farm." When 4 yrs old his parents removed to the place where he died. There he resided all his life with the exception of a year or two, when a a young man, during which period he was manager of the farm of the late Abraham Jarrett (father of the present A. Lingan Jarrett) near Lapidum. Col Butler was one of 9 children, 3 boys and 6 girls. The youngest of the brothers, Dr. Francis Butler, now resides at Westminster, Carroll county. The rest of his brothers & sisters are dead. The Butler family was one of the first in the county, and its influence has been impressive upon the social and political history of Harford. In 1814, Clement Butler, the 18 yrs of age, joined Capt. McAtee's cavalry regiment of cavalry, under command of Col. John Streett.--He marched with his company to the defense of Baltimore, and participated in the battle of North Point which ended in the killing of General Ross, the British commander. The result of the battle was the rescue of Baltimore from the destruction previously visited upon the national capital, and which the British chieftain had sworn should be swift and sure. The regiment to which young Butler belonged was composed of 5 companies, one of which was from Shippensburg, Pa., and numbered between 400-500 men. Capt. McAtee's company consisted of about 84 men. They arrived in Baltimore about a week before the battle and went into camp. It was not holiday soldiering in those days. The commercial metropolis of their State was threatened by the flower of the British army, under the command of one of their ablest generals. For days they had been hanging upon the approaches to the city, seeking to force an entrance. Their ships of war were riding proudly and defiantly upon the Patapsco, just outside Fort McHenry. The glare of their rockets, the bursting of their bombs and the bellowing of their cannon could be distinctly heard from the hill-tops where our troops were encamped. For 3 long days and nights their horses were never unsaddled, the men anxiously waiting and watching for the attack which culminated on the memorable 12th day of September 1814. Col. Streett was ordered to cover the retreating of our forces, and the Seventh was consequently between the main body of our troops and the British, during those perilous hours, "When the strong began to fear the power of man and the news came of the killing of Ross by Wells & McComas, and the haughty foe beat a retreat to their ships. After the battle the different commands were called upon for volunteers for the war. The number required from Capt. McAtee was twenty. When the order was given for the 20 volunteers to step to the front, out of his command at the first. The others were Abraham Rutledge, Edward Rutledge, Robert Glenn and Wm Evitt. The remaining 15 had to be drafted. Upon the return of our troops after the close of the war, those who volunteered at their country's call refused to muster with those who declined or had to be drafted. They raised a new regiment. Of one of the companies Edward Rutledge was elected Captain and Clement Butler Lieutenant. The latter was afterwards promoted to be Captain and on up to Colonel. This title he held to the end of a life full of years and full of honor. He was the Child--the youngest member of the Regiment, at the battle, and he was the last survivor. Of the 84 comrades in his company, of the 400-500 of his regiment, all preceded him to the great camping ground of the dead. The 2 who lingered longest by his side were Samuel Sutton and Dr. James Montgomery, both of Harford county. Of the regiment raised after the war, and it was a very large one, but one, Thomas Ayres of this county, is now living. John Norris of this county, who recently died, was also a comrade of Col. Butler, in the last named regiment. Col. butler was a Whig in politics, and was collector of taxes when it required brave hearts to meet the opposition of those who were bent on breaking down the faith and credit of our State. To be a tax collector then was unpopular, but Col. Butler executed his sworn duty with firmness and bravery, and lived to see the credit of our State redeemed by the measures then adopted for the payment of our debt. Upon the advent of Know Nothingism in 1855, Col. Butler joined his fortunes with the Democratic party, and ever since has been a warm advocate of its measures. In religion he was a Catholic and died in the faith which he lived. --Aegis & Intelligencer, Jan 27, 1882, p. 2
