Description	:	SEAFORD - Daniel Kevin Byrne, Colonel, U.S. Army (Ret.), 83, passed away Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004. Col. Byrne was born Jan. 16, 1921, in Birkenhead, England. He came to the United States with his parents in 1924 and was raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. He joined the Army in September 1940 and served in the Transportation Corps throughout his 35-year Army career. While assigned at the Transportation School, Fort... Read More	SEAFORD - Daniel Kevin Byrne, Colonel, U.S. Army (Ret.), 83, passed away Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004. Col. Byrne was born Jan. 16, 1921, in Birkenhead, England. He came to the United States with his parents in 1924 and was raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. He joined the Army in September 1940 and served in the Transportation Corps throughout his 35-year Army career. Col. Byrne served in W.W. II, the Korean War and Viet Nam. His assignments included commanding a truck battalion in Viet Nam, and he was also commanding officer of Fort Story, Va. While assigned at the Transportation School, Fort Eustis, Va., he was Division Chief, Transportation Military Arts Division. His final assignment was Chief of the Joint U.S. Military Assistance Group-Korea. He retired from the Army in 1975 and settled in Seaford, Va. He was active in the Seaford Yacht Club, U.S. Army Transportation Corps Museum, and the Catholic Chapel at the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station. Col. Byrne married Helena 'Nicki' Nickerson of Farmington, Maine on May 5, 1946. She preceded him in death on Jan. 21, 1994. He is survived by his daughters, Catherine Armstrong of Burke, Va., and Ann Aulich-Byrne of Newport News; his sons, Thomas Byrne and Sean Byrne, both of Gloucester; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27, in Amory Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be private in Peninsula Memorial Park.
