Elliot Ellsworth Lambert, 85, state commander of the Spanish American War Veterans, were held Saturday afternoon at the First Methodist Church in Newton. An honor color guard of Veterans in Spanish American War uniforms was presented at the funeral and conducted final military rites at Newton Union Cemetery. Among those present at the services were a number of state officers of the Odd Fellow Lodge, in which Col. Lambert had been active in all branches for many years. Col. Lambert died last Thursday night in the Veterans hospital in Des Moines. He made his home in Newton until moving to Des Moines where he had resided for the past 34 years. The son of Reuben K. and Cynthia A. Lambert, he was born Jan 8, 1863 in Licking County, Ohio. He married Mary Elizabeth Boydston Jan. 6, 1886, and she preceded him in death in 1936. He served as a colonel of the 50th Iowa Infantry Regiment during the Spanish American War, and during World War I served as a major in the adjutant general’s department. Survivors include one sister, Mrs. E. F. Besser of Newton; four children Earl B. of Des Moines, Harold R. and Robert of Los Angeles and Marjorie B. of Philadelphia, Pa.; six grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Rev. B. H. Finch of Killduff officiated at the services. Pallbearers were John Chaplin, Jesse Demory, John Havens, Albert Spellman, Harry Harland and Earl Moore. Mrs. Maurice Rodgers was soloist accompanied by Mrs. Paul Murdy.
