The son of Albert and Jessie Dakan, Frank was born Sept. 22, 1912, in Longmont, Colo. He was raised and educated in Longmont and worked his way through college at Colorado State University, where he received a degree in forestry. Dakan, 90, of Billings, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at his home. The son of Albert and Jessie Dakan, Frank was born Sept. 22, 1912, in Longmont, Colo. He was raised and educated in Longmont and worked his way through college at Colorado State University, where he received a degree in forestry. Frank served in the Army Corps of Engineers during WWII and was recalled to service during the Korean War. He was stationed at Fort Walters, Texas, from 1953 to 1956 and was professor of military sciences and tactics at the University of Detroit from 1956 to 1960. The next two years were spent as engineers advisor to the Iranian Army in Tehran. He returned to the U.S. and was stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., until 1964, when he was stationed in Hawaii with the U.S. Army Pacific Command. Col. Dakan retired from the Army Corps of Engineers in March 1966. He worked as a contract engineer with the Bureau of Reclamation in Billings until retiring in 1974. He married Vivian Larson in Billings on Oct. 19, 1981. Frank and Vivian traveled the world together, visiting Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Frank was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Al Bedoo Shrine, Elks, the Society of American Military Engineers, and was an avid member of the 39th Combat Engineers, having organized a reunion for the group in Virginia. Survivors include his wife, Vivian of Billings; his son John Dakan and his wife Ya Fong of Mukilteo, Wash.; grandchildren, Steven Dakan, Jennifer Dakan and Pei Chi Tsai; great-grandchild, Andrew; and his sister, Mary Dakan of Estes Park, Colo. Frank is also survived by Vivian's children, Georgia Larson of Minnesota and Jack Larson and his wife Cindy of Billings; grandchildren, Susan Handt, Sharyl Raida and Jesse Larson; and four great-grandchildren. Visitation will begin 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, with interment at Mountview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Al Bedoo Shrine Transportation Trust Fund. Michelotti-Sawyers has charge of arrangements.
