Irvin Hendrix Derrick, 23, Sons of Mr. & Mrs. Ollie Jesse Derrick, Irmo, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for "extraordinary achievement" while serving as navigator of a B-17 Flying Fortress on a number of bombing missions over Germany and German occupied countries from July 29, 1944, to November 29, 1944. The citation accompanying the award read, in part; "On all these operations Lieutenant Derrick exhibited a high degree of proficiency. On October 5, 1944, an engine of the aircraft in which he was flying was damaged by intense anti-aircraft fire forcing it out of commission. After bombs away, another engine was hit, causing it to smoke heavily until it was inoperative. At this point, the airplane left the formation. The pilot entered the under-cast and flew along a heading given him by Lieutenant Derrick. Demonstrating exceptional navigational ability, Lieutenant Derrick guided the airplane around flak installations along the return route. "The aircraft was unable to hold its altitude and all excess equipment was jettisoned. After crossing the Belgian coast another engine began to run roughly, and was rendered useless. Lieutenant Derrick gave the pilot a heading toward an emergency landing field in England. The accuracy of Lieutenant Derrick's calculations resulted in reaching the field at sufficient altitude to accomplish a successful crash landing. The courage, coolness and skill displayed by this officer on all these occasions reflect great credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States." Lieutenant Derrick has participated in some of the Eighth Air Force's roughest missions over Germany. Including Merseburg, where oil refineries were knocked out, and Frankfurt, where marshaling yards and other transposition facilities have been hit hard by our heavy bombers. Thereby curtailing the amount of supplies needed for enemy ground troops. Lieutenant Derrick, a member of the 398th heavy bombardment group commanded by Col. Frank P. Hunter, Jr.. Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, received his training at Maxwell Field, Ala., Shaw Field, S.C., Ft. Myers, Fla., Bennettsville SC, and Selman Field, Louisiana. He was graduated from Irmo High School in 1938, and from Emmanuel College. Franklin Springs, Georgia, in 1941. Before entering the Army, July 25, 1943, he worked as an engineer for McShain Constriction company, Washington, DC. ================================================== MELBOURNE, Fla., - Irvin Hendrix “Mike” Derrick, age 87, of Melbourne, Florida, went to be with Lord on March 9, 2009. He was born on November 18, 1921, in Ballentine, South Carolina, to Ollie Jessie and Anna Derrick. The youngest of 6 brothers and 1 sister, Mike served in the Army Air Corps in WWII and retired as a lieutenant colonel after a long and distinguished career in the Air Force. In the course of Mike’s lifetime he worked on the surveying crew for the original construction of the Pentagon, flew B-17 bombers in WWII, taught astronauts how to fly, earned multiple Bachelor Degrees (Industrial Engineering and Biblical Studies) and a Master’s Degree in Industrial Engineering, taught at the college level (University of Michigan, Ohio State University) and much more. But Mike would want to be most remembered for his love of the Lord. He could always be counted on to lead a Sunday School class, be part of a church board and answer phones for WCIF’s annual share-a-thon. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Betty Ruby; children, Karen (Doug) Hamilton; Robin (Robert) Luber, Mike (Natalie) Derrick, Steve (Sally) Derrick and grandchildren, Kaitlyn Luber, Megan Derrick, and Andrew, Grant and Brooke Derrick. Mike will be sorely missed but his family celebrates his new life with the Lord. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 13th, 2009, at Calvary Chapel of Melbourne, 2955 Minton Road, Melbourne, Florida.
