He was a major in the War of 1812. Their daughter, Adeline, married Judge Francis Yosti of Saint Charles. The home was later called the Yosti home. The unusual porch in front of the house was jokingly called "Hog's Heaven." Before the stock law, Major Morrison kept his hogs in the "downstairs" porch. They were kept cool in the summer and warm in the winter. In 1840, Major Morrison had the first Berkshire hogs introduced into Saint Charles County. They were imported from Albany, NY. Since that time, Saint Charles County has become noted for its fine pork stock. This home was originally a log house and was later covered with clapboards. (Edna McElhiney Olson was Archivist for the St. Charles County Historical Society during the 1960's. She searched records of the people of early St. Charles and its historical buildings. Now out of print, her 'blue book' of St. Charles early structures is among the treasures in the Historical Society archives and many personal libraries. Edna wrote and published stories of the people and events, and though some stories might be considered to have some 'glamour added', they are all interesting and reflect the character of the people and the events of the period. Edna Olson loved St. Charles: she inspired others to continue researching and collecting records and more is now known about many of the buildings and events about which she wrote. Her work still serves as a reference in the continuing research into St. Charles long and proud history.) William, James and Jesse Morrison, were natives of the State of New Jersey. William settled at Kaskaskia, Illinois, and made a fortune merchandising. James and Jesse settled in the town of St. Charles, in 1800. In 1804 James went to New Orleans and purchased a hogshead of sugar, and as he returned he peddled it out to the settlers, but had enough left, upon his arrival in St. Charles, to supply the wants of the people of that county for three years. Several years afterwards he and his brother bought the salt works at Boone's Lick, and operated them for sometime. James finally bought his brother's interest in the works, and the latter went to the lead mines at Galena, Illinois. The two brothers married sisters, French ladies, named Saucier, of Portage des Sioux. James Morrison had six children: Adeline, Caroline, Frize, William, James, and another son whose name we could not obtain [see Joseph L. Morrison of below], and who was killed by an accidental discharge of his gun, the ramrod passing through his head [correction: scalded in a kettle of boiling salt water]. Adeline married Judge Francis Yosti of St. Charles. Caroline married William G. Pettis. Frize married George Collier. When James Morrison courted his sweetheart she could speak only a few words of broken English, and he could not speak a word of French. So their courtship had to be carried on principally by those glances of the eye which speak love from one soul to another, and it would doubtless have been a very slow process if the lady had not, with true French tact, brought matters to an immediate crisis. When she met him at his school visit, she blushingly inquired: "What for you come here so much? Do you want to marry me? If you do, you must marry me to-morrow, or there is another man who will marry me in two days."
