Dell Colonel John Boston Dell was born in 1838 in Newnansville, Florida, near the present-day town of Alachua. His family was among the earliest white settlers who moved into Alachua County. The Second Seminole War was raging the year he was born, and he was 7 years old when Florida became a state. After exemplary service in the Civil War, Col. Dell further served his community as a member of the Florida State Senate and the House of Representatives. He moved to Gainesville in the 1880s and lived on Roper Avenue (East 7th Street). He died on May 21, 1914, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery Notes for JOHN BOSTON DELL: Excerpt from the Florida Historical Quarterly, "Newnansville: A Lost Florida Settlement" by Susan Yelton. Although considerable farming continued around Newnansville, its population began to move, mainly to Gainesville. By 1883 when Carl Webber wrote his 'Eden of the South', he noted that Newnansville "had become so isolated from other portions of the county but few inhabitants of Alachua County have ever visited or know of its many attractive features." Although Senator John Boston Dell owned 2,000 acres southeast of Newnansville, he was living in Gainesville in the 1880's. The Gainesville mayor, Samuel J. Burnett, was the son of Samuel Burnett who had built the Newnansville courthouse. Not everyone deserted Newnansville. Several of the Dells continued to live there. Webber described their family farm as being like a New England scene, "beautiful hammocks, hilly and fertile, flourishing in the cultivated portions with waving corn, bordered with grassy hillside and plains." John Boston Dell's house in Hague burned down in the 1930's, long after the Dell family no longer owned it. It fronted US 441 on the South side of the highway. From an undated newspaper clipping found in Allie Dell's Bible: COL. JOHN B. DELL PASSED AWAY THURSDAY AT 4:30 PM Col. John B. Dell passed away at his home in this city Thursday afternoon, May 21, at 4:30 o'clock, the result of an illness which extended over a period of fourteen weeks. About eight weeks ago, his physician advised that he be carried to a sanitarium in Jacksonville for an operation, the recommendations being made as a last resort to prolong the life of the gentleman who had spent his entire existence among us and who was looked upon as one of our best and noblest citizens. The operation was successful and for a time Col. Dell seemed to improve. However, at intervals he had sinking periods, each one being a little more acute, and he became worse gradually from the date that he returned to his home. His return, however, was recommended by the specialist in Jacksonville, as they had done all possible toward his restoration in the successful performance of the operation. Col. Dell was partially unconscious since last Tuesday. Few men in Florida were more widely known among the older citizens of the state, and his passing will cause sincere regret among thousands, not only in this, but other counties. Col. Dell was in his seventy-sixth year and was a native of Alachua having been born at old Newnansville. When the war between the states came on, he shouldered his musket and went through the memorable conflict a member of Co. F, Second Florida Regiment. At the close of the war, he engaged in farming near Trenton and was one of the largest planters in the state for many years. He owned much property in his early life, among his holdings being some tracts of phosphate lands. He moved to Gainesville in the latter nineties. Col. Dell was many times honored by the electorate of this county, and their trust was not misplaced.. He was a member of the state senate one term and served in the house of representatives two terms. He was loyal to the Democratic Party and took pride in upholding its policies. He was likewise generous to a fault, and following the disastrous storm which, in 1896, swept over a portion of this county, devastating everything in its path and making paupers out of scores of families, he joined the band of noble men who went through the stricken territory distributing supplies and ministering to those upon whom misfortune had visited. He was a member of the Methodist Church and lived the life befitting a Christian. Surviving deceased are his wife and five children, who were with him throughout his last illness. The children are Mrs. E. Lartigue, J.B. Dell, Jr. and J.Bloxham Dell of this city and Mrs. J. L. Cloud, and Mrs. Henry N. LeRoy of Alachua. Among other relatives are one brother, Capt. J. Maxey Dell of this city, and a sister, Mrs. E.B. Williams of Jacksonville. The funeral will be held at the residence this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock by Rev. Charnelle H. Summers, pastor of the First Methodist Church, and interment will be made at Evergreen Cemetery. The arrangements are in charge of the Thomas Undertaking Company. The active pall-bearers will be Philip Miller, Maj. W.R. Thomas, J.S. DuPuis of Alachua, L. W. Fennell of Hawthorn, C.Y. Crawford, W.S. Campbell, Attorney W.S. Broome and J.C. Haile. The honorary pall-bearers are Solomon Warren, Maj. Jno W. Tench, Maj. W.O. Tyson, James Chesnut, Dr. J.F. McKinstry Sr, and W.N. Wilson. Note: In Evergreen Cemetery, John Boston Dell shares a four-sided white marble monument with his first wife, Laura L. Dell and twin sons Loring Dell and McKay Dell. His inscription reads: John Boston Dell Sept 25, 1838 May 10, 1914. Will of John Boston Dell In the name of God, Amen. I, John B. Dell, of the City of Gainesville, Florida, do make this my Last Will and Testament, as follows: I direct that body be decently buried, without needless expense, in a manner corresponding to my estate and my situation in life. And as to such worldly estate as I may die seised (sic) or possessed of, I dispose of the same as follows: First. I give to my dear wife, Mrs. John B. Dell, for the term of her natural life my home together with all the furniture and fixtures therein including the two lots upon which it is situated, being on Roper Avenue in Gainesville, Florida, Provided, however, that should she marry the property so left to her herein shall go to my children. Second. It is my will and desire that as to all other property real and personal, and wheresoever situated, that I may die seised (sic), and possessed of that same shall go to all of my children, share and share alike, and to their decendants (sic), the decendants (sic) sharing equally among themselves the shares to which their respective parents would be entitled. Third. I hereby authorize, empower and direct my Executors hereinafter named, as soon as may be convenient after my death and within a reasonable time thereafter, to divide my estate left to my children and to give each the share and interest they are entitled to, and that if in the judgment and discretion of my Executors any part of my estate so left my children can not be equitably divided and apportioned among them, then in such event they sell each part and divide the proceeds, such sale to be made as they see fit, except as to my store building and lot situated on the east side of the Public Square in Gainesville, Florida, the same to be held by them as hereinafter provided. Fourth. It is my will and desire that my store referred to in the proceeding item shall not be sold until it brings not less than twelve thousand dollars. That my executors shall have the charge and control of said store until sold and that the rents and profits coming therefrom, after the payment of all taxes, insurance and repairs and expenses necessary to keep the same up, that such net profits shall be apportioned equally between my children, and that such apportionment shall be made within a reasonable time after the payment of rents or other payments thereon. That my Executors shall keep said store insured for the highest amount up to the value of the building that the same can be insured for and in the event of loss by fire the same shall be rebuilt with the money received from insurance. Fifth. I hereby nominate and appoint my two sons, Charles M. Dell and James B. Dell to be the Executors of this my Will and desire that they be required to give no bond or take no oath in order to qualify as such. That I hereby give them full power to make all deeds of conveyance or Bills of Sale and to execute all necessary papers connected to my estate.
