Read More	DEATH OF COLONEL HOGAN Pioneer of Palouse and Veteran of Confederate Army The Pioneers of the Palouse are passing away one by one. Last week, C. A. Case and Edward Irwin were placed to rest, and the sod is but little more than laid before we are called upon to report the death of another. This time it is Colonel Ridgeway B. Hogan, an octogenarian, who passed away last Sunday at his home in this city, in the fullness of years and surrounded by many members of his family. He was sick but a short time, pneumonia being given as the cause of death. Katherine Ridgeway Hogan, the noted elocutionist, who makes her home in Chicago, is a gifted daughter of whom he was very proud; likewise, Lucy Lee Hogan, a reciter, who lives in Boston. His other children are Paul S. Hogan of White Horse, Alaska; Mrs. W. J. Cohoes of Tekoa, and Mrs. J. R. Butcher, Miss Lillian Hogan, Miss Evelyn Hogan, and Harry Hogan, who reside in Colfax. His wife died about two years ago. The following excerpt of the birth and principal events in the life of Colonel Hogan is taken from the address of Judge Chadwick, delivered t the funeral ceremonies: Ridgeway B. Hogan, was born on January 26, 1825, in Jone's County, Georgia. he moved with his parents to Campbell County, Georgia, where he was raised to manhood. He joined the Confederate Army at the first suggestion of hostilities between the North and the South and served until the surrender of General Lee. He entered the Army under Stonewall Jackson and was with that great General at the time he was fatally wounded by one of his own soldiers, being one of the numbers that sustained him and removed him from the place he had fallen. He was afterward promoted and served as Colonel of the 19th Georgia under General Lee until near the close of the war. "Few men has seen more actual service than did Colonel Hogan. He participated in 56 battles and engagements during the war and was twice wounded. The principal engagements in which he participated were Gettysburg, Manassas Junction, Antietam, Chickamauga, and Bull Run. During the last year of the war, he was with the Army of General Joseph E. Johnston and at the close of the war was discharged in the state of North Carolina." "He was married to Miss Eugenia V. Cochran, August 21, 1864, and after the close of the war was elected sheriff of Campbell County and served two terms." In the year 1875, broken in spirit and in fortune, he moved with his family to California, and in 1877, moved to Whitman County, Washington, and settled on the old homestead near Colfax, where he engaged in Farming until 1896, since which time he has resided in Colfax. The body was interred Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, under the auspices of Hiram Lodge, No. 21, F & A. m., and was largely attended by old-time friends and acquaintances. The services were held at the home., Rev. J. H. Bainton offering a prayer, otherwise the Masons having full charge of the ceremonies Judge Chadwich delivered a brief but feeling tribute to the memory of the deceased. Judge Inman, H. Van Schoick, J. S. Buck, Benjamin Baker, E. D. Lake, and S. . Cassedy, all G. A. R. men, were pallbearers. The remains were placed beside those of his wife in Colfax Cemetery, where also rests one child, who died several years ago. He was made a mason as soon as he was 21 in Unity Lodge, No. 74, the jurisdiction of Georgia, and was an active member of the order for over 61 years. Hogan of this city last week received a bronze cross of honor from the Daughters of the Confederacy, which was presented by Lieut. G. F. Cranford, Company C, 19th Georgia regiment. Mr. Hogan was colonel of this regiment and the cross is in commemoration of the dedication of a beautiful monument erected at Palmetto, Ga., in honor of the soldiers of Company C. Miss Katherine Ridgeway Hogan, the talented daughter of Col. Hogan, was present at the unveiling ceremonies, which occurred on April 26. That was the latest record in his CSR. Following the death of Col. James Neal at the battle of Bentonville, NC in March 1865, Hogan assumed command of the 19th Georgia Regiment. O. R. has two returns for the Organization of the Confederate forces commanded by General Joseph E. Johnston dated March 31 and April 9, 1865, which show Hogan commanding the regiment. However, parole documents for the regiment in late April 1865 were signed by Major W. F. Hamilton, commanding regiment. Complicating the genealogical record are a cousin and uncle named Ridgeway Hogan. Here is what I think distinguish them. Ridgeway B. Hogan was born in Jones County, Ga. in 1825 and served for the war as a company and field officer in the 19th Georgia Regiment. Ridgeway W. Hogan was born in Monroe Co, Ga. in 1837, enlisted as a private in the 1st Georgia Regt (Ramsey's), and was later appointed Quartermaster Sergeant. He mustered out in 1862, enlisted as a private in the 53rd Georgia Regiment, was shortly thereafter appointed Captain and AQM, and was detached from the regiment for duty in Atlanta. R. W. Hogan was the son of Ridgeway Hogan, born 1790 in S.C. who served in the War of 1812. The eldest Ridgeway Hogan was the brother of William Lawrence Hogan, Jr, the father of R. B.
