Description	:	(Obituary, "Manchester (Iowa) Press," 13 August 1896). Samuel moved to Delaware County in 1855, and worked as a carpenter. He enlisted in Company "H", 12th Iowa infantry on 19 September 1861 and mustered in as Company 1st Sergeant. He and the regiment saw considerable action in the Civil War, including the Battle of Shiloh, where Samuel was captured on 6 April 1862. After being held in Montgomery, Alabama, and in Richmond, he was exchanged six months later. He returned to the regiment in time for service at Vicksburg and in the Tennessee Campaign, and was promoted through the ranks to Lieutenant Colonel... He mustered out with the regiment in Memphis on 20 January 1866. He married Julia Moreland in Delaware county on 19 July 1866. They had at least four children: Frank, Blanche, Leslie and Edward. He owned a dry goods, hardware and grocery store after the war. "He was as firm and loyal a friend as he had been a brave and intrepid soldier....He was a man to be counted upon, a man of sound judgment, conservative, yet progressive in all that tended to the betterment of the town he lived in."
