Description	:	Walkup has been credited with drawing the first map of Monroe (N.C.). Son of Robert & Elizabeth Johnston Hoey Walkup, he was a graduate of UNC (Chapel Hill), a soldier (first with the N. C. Militia and later with the Confederate States Army), a state senator, lawyer, a musician (flutist) and a Mason. Son of Robert & Elizabeth Johnston Hoey Walkup, he was a graduate of UNC (Chapel Hill), a soldier (first with the N. C. Militia and later with the Confederate States Army), a state senator, lawyer, a musician (flutist) and a Mason. When his half-sister, Sara Walkup Belk (Simpson), lost her husband at the hands of Sherman's raiders (Feb. 26, 1865) he wrote to her his sorrow and that he was torn between family and service but "I am willing to fight desperately to the end...". It was said that he was rather awkward at drilling and that his soldiers would sometimes laugh at him (hopefully discreetly) but that he was one of the bravest and most capable officers in battle. He married Margaret Pamelia ("Minnie") Reese Price Oct. 4, 1860 in Mecklenburg County, N.C. (marriage bond can be found at familysearch.org) Together they had 5 children, all daughters: Lelia Eugenia (Davis); Esther Alice Jane (Kluttz); Minnie Rebecca; Mary Willis "Willie" (Matthews); Daisy Ellen - none were of age when he died in 1876. Samuel Huey Walkup, was born in [what later became] Union County, N. C, Jan. 22, 1818, and died Oct. 26, 1876, aged 58 years, 9 months and 4 days. His death was a Christian triumph. He embraced wife and children tenderly, as if he was going for a long journey, and bade them and their friends standing at his bedside to meet him in heaven. He died "Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch around him and lies down to pleasant dreams." The funeral services were conducted by the Presbyterian pastor in the Methodist Church, that was the largest church in town. The largest procession that had probably ever been in Monroe, attended his remains to their last resting place, where he was buried with Masonic honors. All business ceased, all business houses were closed and deep and genuine sorrow was depicted on the countenaces of all.” -From a chapter written by Julia Walkup Davis in “History of the McDowells, Erwins, Irwins and Connections: being a compilation from various sources” by Hon.
