Glenn A Stainless Christian, a Noble Patriot and an Honored Citizen Gone Come when and where it may, there's something awful in death. But when it strikes down those we revere and love we stand in its hushed presence dumb with awe and sorrow. Words seem idle and sounds but mock the wounded depth of feeling. Such was the universal sentiment, when, on last Friday morning the startling intelligence passed from lip to lip and heart to heart that Col. Glenn was dead. Few of our people knew that he had been in serious danger. Only the Monday before, he had acted as one of the judges of election, and had greeted his countless friends with his usual hearty good cheer. But he knew, and his most intimate friends knew, that his time on earth was short. He was suffering from an organic disease of the heart, and had insisted on a frank statement of his condition. His physician could only assure him of short lease of life, at the best, and warned him that death might come at any moment. Col. Glenn was not afraid of death. He talked of it calmly, almost serenely. He felt no alarm, and expressed himself as ready at any moment. Those who have known him for the past few years are aware of his deep troubles, whose gloom only brought out more brightly the lustre of his grand, Christian character. When, through no fault of his own, the accumulations of a busy life were placed in jeopardy, and many another man would have saved all he could, Col. Glenn freely gave up everything he had. If an honest man is the noblest work of God, then there's no human soul in all the universe stands closer to the eternal throne. Shortly after 4 o'clock, Friday morning, Mrs. Glenn noticed the Colonel was breathing with great difficulty. She endeavored to rouse him, but he had already passed into unconsciousness. His physician, Dr. W.W. Glenn, was hastily summoned. Life was extinct before his arrival. Col. Glenn was a son of Samuel and Jane B. Glenn. He was born near Staunton, in Rockingham county, Via., December 12, 1824. His parents moved to Gallia county, this State, in 1829. From there they came to Highland county and occupied a farm near this city, in 1832. On this farm he was raised to manhood's estate, receiving his education in the common schools and the Hillsboro Academy. Of a practical and industrious turn, he became a master stone and brick mason. For two years in early life, he taught school. For ten years he served the now B. & O. S.W. system as railroad and express agent in this city, in which capacity his pleasant address and thorough business qualities made fast friends of all with whom he came in contact. This position he held until 1862, when he recruited Co. A., of the 89th O.V.I. , and went to the front as its commander. He was wonderfully modest, and never sought advancement. But, during his first year of service, he was almost compelled to accept promotions by which he became, successively Major and Lieut. Col. of the regiment. After the battle of Murfreesboro, the 89th was assigned to the army of the Cumberland. With the bulk of his regiment, he was captured at Chickamauga, in 1863. For eleven months he was a prisoner of war, suffering the horrors of Libby and Macon for nine months, when he was selected as one of the fifty Union officers who were to be taken Charleston by the Confederates and placed under the fire Gilmore's guns, with a hope of abating the siege. It will be remembered that the Federal authorities retaliated by putting a like number of Confederate officers in the midst of Gilmore's forces. This move led to a parley and exchange, through which Col. Glenn was released. He immediately returned, by way of New York City and home, to Atlanta, where, just one year from the date of his capture, he took command of the regiment, and led it through Sherman's famous march to the sea. In battle he was the personification of cool and daring courage. In camp and on the march he was a loving, fatherly, brotherly soul to every soldier. After returning from the war, Col. Glenn settled down to a humble, quiet life as a manufacturer of brick and a building contractor. But the people who knew him so well called him from his retirement, and, in 1872, elected him as Treasurer of the county. In 1874, they reelected him. After the expiration of official term, he embarked in the dry goods business, in which spent sixteen prosperous years. He had closed his business affairs and expected to live the balance of his days free from financial cares, when the failure of the Citizens' National Bank, in this city, swept away all his earthly possessions. His sterling integrity and honest manhood in this trying crisis won the admiration of all. The people took him up, and elected him to the General Assembly of the State with a majority that had never been equaled before. He has always been a public spirited man and has again and again served the city with eminent ability in its School Board and Council. He was a faithful and valued member of the M.E. Church, with which he united upon his return from the army. Col. Glenn was married in 1850 to Miss Kate Ambrose, of this city. Their union was a blessed and happy one. Their five children were, Charles, Frank, Harry, Maggie and Dick. Of these, Charles and Dick have long been dead. Maggie is now Mrs. W.C. Smith, of Lafayette, Indiana. Col. Glenn's brothers and sisters are, Mrs. Mary Mitchell, of Mound City, Mo.; John B. Glenn, of Wichita, Kan.; Mrs. Lizzie Denny, of Washington, Iowa; Mrs. Fanny Forey, of Shreveport, La.; S.H. Glenn, of Kiowa, Kas.; Marshall Glenn, of Marshall, Kas. Besides his Church membership, which he prized above all else, Col. Glenn was a prominent member of the Masonic, Odd Fellow, A.O.U.W. and G.A.R. fraternities. Also, of the Royal Arcanum and Fraternal Union. The funeral was probably the largest ever known in Highland county. There were hundreds here from the surrounding country, and many from distant points. At ten o'clock the Grand Army (under whose auspices the funeral took place), and the other orders of which Colonel Glenn had been a member, repaired to his late home. They, together with the Scott Dragoons and Military Band, and an immense procession in carriages, escorted the body to the M.E. Church, arriving at 11 o'clock. The funeral services were very impressive. After appropriate music, Rev. G.H. Dart read the beautiful service of the Methodist ritual, and offered a fervent prayer. Presiding Elder, Rev. Dr. T.H. Pearne, read a sketch of Colonel Glenn's life, which he supplemented with a touching tribute of his own to the worth and honor of the deceased. He then delivered a few beautiful and thoughtful remarks on the theme of Death - its earthward and its heavenward view. Rev. Dr. W.J. McSurely, of the Presbyterian Church, offered a prayer full of earnestness and love. Then, to the strains of sad, sweet music, the casket was carried down to the vestibule, where the immense throng could view the remains as they passed out. The pall-bearers were Hon. J.B. Foraker, Capt. D.M. Barrett, of Lancaster; H.H. Redkey, J.W. Patterson, Cyrus Barrett and D. Naylor, all comrades of Col. Glenn. The almost endless procession passed out High Street to Oaklawn Cemetery. There the usual Grand Army service was performed, and Gov. Foraker offered a few memories of the past, telling what he knew of his own personal knowledge about Col. Glenn. The Governor had begged of him the privilege of being the first to enlist in his company, and had always been proud of that honor. He had known Col. Glenn through every trial and danger of army life. He had known him in peace, as well as war, and he had always loved him. Incidents of the past were related with a tender, touching eloquence that sent tears rolling down the cheeks of every comrade. Thus have been consigned to dust the mortal remains of Col. Glenn, but his memory shall live on, in the throbbing hearts of those who loved him. ==================================================
