A native of Cherokee County, he was the widower of Rhonda Earls Porter and son of the late Cole and Sarah Jean Whelchel Porter Sr. He was a member of Cherokee Falls Baptist Church. Surviving are his daughter, Ruby Jean Dover of Blacksburg; a brother, Wayne Porter of Gaffney; a sister, Mary P. Stockwell of Gaffney; and two grandchildren. Services were held Sunday at 4 p.m. at Cherokee Falls Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Tim Knotts. Burial was in Frederick Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Ben Cole, Carl Mullinax, David Mullinax, Freddy Byars, Blaine Anderson and Lee Allison. The family is at the residence. Memorials may be made to Cherokee Falls Baptist Church, 109 School St., Blacksburg, S.C. 29702; or to Hospice Care of S.C., 207 N. Limestone St., Gaffney, S.C. 29340.
