The first arrivals were Coleman Selph, born in Rockbridge Co., Va. in 1806 the son of a physician. He chose Mary Heck for his bride. MADISON BOATRIGHT); AND HESTER SELPH 1843-1866. ELI SELPH, BORN JAN 30,1830 SURVIVED UNTIL FEB. 1 1907. HIS WIFE, LYDIA, ALSO BORN IN 1830, SUCCUMBED A FEW DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS IN 1887. THEY TOOK OVER THE OLD FAMILY HOMESTEAD AND CONTINUED TO IMPROVE THE SURROUNDINGS. BEN AMI SELPH, YOUNGEST OF THE SONS OF COLEMAN SELPH, BORN IN 1838, WAS ALSO A PROGRESSIVE FARMER. HE PURCHASED THE LAND CLEARED BY THE EARLY TEACHER AND FARMER, JOHN MATTHEWS, ON CLEAR CREEK, NORTH OF HILLSBORO. IN 1864, HE MARRIED ELIZABETH ROBB, A MEMBER OF THE ROBB FAMILY WHO SETTLED IN CLERMONT COUNTY IN 1804. THEY WERE THE PARENTS OF THE FOLLOWING CHILDREN: COLEMAN E. (his wife was Elizabeth Keeler)/ Georgia (Mrs. Carey McConnaughey; Auta (wife of Dr. George Groth); Pearl; Arlington; and Vesta Selph,. Cynthia, daughter of Coleman Selph, born July 31, 1835, became the wife of John Roland Rogers. He was the youngest son of Robert and Nancy (Phillipa) Rogers.
