Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Ryan. Colette was born Jan. 25, 1913, the daughter of James and Mary Cashman O'Neil, in their farm home one mile west of Ryan. Since their house was in the city limits, Colette was the oldest living native of Ryan. Colette married James A. "Cap" McElliott on June 27, 1934, at St. Patrick's Church in Ryan. Nine children were born to this union and they devoted their lives to the raising of their children. Colette was a lifelong member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Ryan. She was a retired postmaster, serving 18 years in Ryan, Cedar Rapids and Quasqueton, and the last eight years as postmaster of Toddville. Colette enjoyed life to the fullest. Her positive attitude and great sense of humor were enjoyed by many. Her deep faith and Christian example as a mother and grandmother leave a fond legacy for her family. Her memory lives on in each of them. Colette's hobbies include crocheting, quilting, baking, cryptogram puzzles, cards and music, and especially time spent with family and friends and her senior citizen group. She loved organ, violin and piano music. She played the violin and sang with the church choir as a young girl. Colette will be fondly remembered by her five daughters, Joanne (Jerry) Drahozal and Judy (Jerry) Flanagan, all of Cedar Rapids, Janet (George) Howes of Shawnee, Kan., Jeanine (John) Reilly of Ankeny and Jayne (Gary) Schuster of Dubuque; two sons, Patrick (Diane) McElliott of Cedar Rapids and Mike (Diane) McElliott of Ryan; 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Catherine "Katie" Mulvehill (who shared the same birthday) of Manchester; a sister in-law, Coletta Fitzpatrick of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews. Colette was preceded in death by her husband, James on April 3, 1994; her parents; three sisters, Ellen "Nellie" Ryan, Mary "Mae" McMahon and Margaret "Peg" O'Neil; an infant son, James Richard; an infant daughter, Patricia Jane; and twin granddaughters, Nancy and Karen Howes. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick's Social Circle, Ryan, Iowa. The family wishes to extend their appreciation and gratitude to Regional Medical Center staff, Dr. Tedd Gentry, Dan Meyer, PA, and Hospice of Comfort, especially Lila Geers as well as the staff at the Good Neighbor Home, Father Simington and Father Glaser. ..Cedar Rapids IA Gazette 15SEP2000.
