Wray Are the Victims - Bodies Wash Ashore From J.H. Lovering, who returned Monday from a visit with his family at Ilwaco, we learn the particulars of an accident that terminated fatally for a prominent citizen of this county. The Pilot has recently published one or two accounts of a peculiarly constructed boat which was built expressly for sailing in the surf at Long Beach. It was thought that the boat was so constructed as to be perfectly safe in all kinds of water but, on Sunday, it exposed its unreliable character by capsizing and drowning two out of its nine passengers while coming in through the breakers after a trip to the open seas. The party, consisting of Colonel DeLong, John W. Wray, John Adamson, Gilbert and Harry Tinker, Frank Lyniff, John McKean and Claude and Clyde Woodham, went out early in the morning, but, as the water was quite rough, decided not to attempt a return until flood tide which occurred about noon. At that time they made the attempt but in the midst of the breakers, the boat capsized and the entire party was precipitated into the water. All were equipped with life preservers and all but DeLong and Wray could swim, and, with the greatest difficulty, were enabled to reach the shore. The other two, however, could not swim and were overwhelmed in the boiling mass of water and drowned. The life saving crews at Ilwaco and Long Beach were at once summoned by telephone and were shortly on the scene. The bodies were soon after washed ashore and every effort was made to restore the men to consciousness but all without avail. The seven men who managed to gain the shore were utterly exhausted with their long struggle in the boiling, seething mass of water. Colonel DeLong was born at Oskaloosa, Iowa, Feb. 24, 1862, and was a little more than 44 years of age at the time of his death. He was one of the best known men in the county and was the owner of a good farm, not far from Long Beach, on which he has lived with his family for a number of years. He was one of our most highly respected citizens and has several times been his party's choice for various county offices. He leaves a wife and three children, the oldest six years of age, and eight sisters and one brother in Iowa. His tragic death has cast a gloom over the entire community. Young Wray was only 18 years of age, and so far as is known, has no relatives in this part of the country. Our Long Beach correspondent writes further particulars of the drowning of Colonel DeLong and John Wray at Long Beach last Sunday. It appears from this account that DeLong was in the water for an hour and a quarter and Wray was in for two hours. DeLong washed ashore at the Jacobson place and Wray at the Breakers hotel. Doctors worked unceasingly over them for more than an hour but the exposure and long submerging in water had done their work and life was extinct.
