Hanley was a former city attorney, served on various official boards, and was active in working for Mississippi river levee improvement projects. Hanley gained national recognition as the winner of innumerable trophies a s a motorboat racing driver. He was a familiar figure throughout most of his lifetime in the various local, regional, national, and international organizations of that violent sport. Born in Muscatine on Jan. 24, 1878, Charles P. Hanley was the son of John R. and Kate Rhodes-Hanley. Mr. Hanley received his degree from the University of Iowa Law School in 1900, and joined his father and brother in practice here. His brother, the late Joe R. Hanley, later served as Lt. Governor of New York during the administration of Thomas Dewey. --- "Chap" Hanley served four years as the Muscatine City attorney, and was one of the early members of the municipal light and water board of trustees. He resigned this year as a member of the Muscatine Levee Improvement Commission, a board on which he had served for 30 years. He had worked with local, state and national officials to gain levee improvements, and Muscatine's Riverside park was a project to which he had devoted much personal attention. Mr. Hanley became a hydroplane race driver in 1912 and won dozens of trophies and cups in races run throughout the United states. He was one of the organizers and was the first commodore of the Mississippi Valley Power Boat Association, and was first president of the International Power Boat Union. He was a life member of the Muscatine Power Boat Club, and an honorary life member of the Elks lodge. He was a former president of the Muscatine County Bar Association, and several years ago received the Good Government award from the Muscatine Jaycees. Mr. Hanley is survived by his widow, Mrs. Anita Hanley, and several nieces and nephews. His first wife, the former Ethel Salisbury, died in 1949. Services are pending at the Fairbanks home for funeral in Muscatine. (written in ink; 1-2-1968) Funeral services for Charles P. Hanley were held today at the Fairbanks Chapel. Rev. Lawrence Stumme of the Lutheran Homes was the officiating pastor. Pallbearers were A. Wayne Eckhardt, Harvey Allbee, Sr., Robert Wilson, Gary Woodward, Elmer Bloom, Jr., and Robert Petersen. Honorary bearers were M. L. Sutton, Arthur Jannssen, Nathan Grant, Lowell D. Phelps, James R. Havercamp, R. K. Stohr, Clay LeGrand, Fred Schwengle, Clarence Schmarje, Lee Osborn, David Stanley, Richard Drake, and Edward S. Burns. Interment was at Greenwood cemetery.
