He was confirmed in the year 1870. He was married to Rose Lahann, of Wheatland, November 30, 1877, to which union was born five children; Chas. of Wheatland; Mrs. Louis Twatchman of Lowden; Edward and Alfred of Toronto; and Mrs. Ed Benninger of Lowden; also six grandchildren. Two brothers and three half sisters are left to mourn his demise. Mr. Endorf was one of oldest settlers in this vicinity, having living on the old Endorf homestead for the most of their married life, where they reared their famiy and accumulated their share of this world's goods, retiring from the farm life and moved to town a few years ago to enjoy the rest they had earned. Conrad was a very active man and after he moved to town he still farmed on a small scale. Mr. Endorf was always a good fellow, with plenty of friends, always enjoying the outdoor life, a great hunter, fisher and trapper, which he followed for a pastime up to a year ago, when he was taken sick. Medical aid of all kinds was tried but to no avail. He was cheerful and glad to see his friends up to the last. He passed peacefully away at his home Wednesday morning at 8:55, death resulting from dropsy of the heart. Funeral services were held at the home Saturday afternoon, Mr. Kreager of Davenport officiating, assisted by the Wheatland choir, after which the remains were laid to rest in the low German Cemetery near Wheatland. The many beautiful floral offerings, and the large attendance, was a testimonial of the high esteem in which Mr. Endorf was held in this vicinity, as well as the neighboring towns, which were represented. The sympathy of the entire community is with the widow and the family. Oxford Mirror, November 19, 1914 ************************************************************* CONRAD ENDORF (parents' history) Conrad's father, William Carl Endorf (1807 Germany - 13 Aug 1877 Iowa) and his first wife, Caroline Unknown (abt. 1810 Germany - 1847 Illinois) emigrated from Germany to the U.S. aboard the ship Victoria arriving in New Orleans, Louisiana, 28 Jun 1847. They had three young daughters who journeyed with them: Sophia, Charlotte and Wilhelmina. They settled in Randolph County, IL. It is speculated that Caroline died shortly thereafter. William married Wilhelmina Bicknese on 30 Jan 1848 in Monroe County, IL. They settled in Iowa in 1854. Three children were born to this union: William 1848-1921, Conrad 1854-1914 and Frederick 1854-1883. In his will signed 8 Aug 1877 and proved 18 Sep 1877 William Endorf names wife Wilhelmina; daughter Wilhelmina Puetsch; daughter Sophia Bentrott (deceased) and her children Emma Bentrott, Frederick Bentrott, Henry Bentrott and William Bentrott; daughter Charlotte Lohman; sons: William Endorf, Frederick Endorf, Conrad Endorf. H. Pieper; general dealers and coal, Hart & Hart; grain, B. C. Horstmann; lumber, J. O. Devitt; Stock dealers, O. C. Mowry, Herman Endorf; Livery, John Miller, Conrad Endorf; Excelsior Hotel, Mrs. Jacobs; Farmers' Cooperative Creamery, Herbert Morey, president, Ed Hart, Jr., secretary. Toronto was incorporated as a town in May, 1909. The officers elected then, who are still serving, were: Mayor, O. C. Mowry; treasurer, J. O. Devitt; clerk, D. O. Kidd; assessor, M. B. Hart; marshal, August Willard; council, Al Conway, N. J. Edwards, M. G. Yale, William Hunter and F. H. Pieper. A town building of cement blocks, sixteen by thirty-two, has just been completed, with a jail in connection, probably the most secure in the county. The streets are macadamized, and the town is proud of River View park, which has an opera house and dance hall in connection. The town has never grown very fast, and has not more than a hundred inhabitants, but lately a wave of building activity has struck it, along with most Clinton county towns. CHAPTER XXIII.
