Read More	DEATH CALLS NOTED CITIZEN Resident of the Soldier community are grieving the loss of one of their best known and most respected citizens—Conrad Evenson, who died about 3:00 o'clock Tuesday morning after an illness of six months with cancer. He was about 50 years old. Conrad underwent surgery shortly after Christmas at a Lincoln hospital where the family had lived the past year. Since that time it was one setback after another and everything possible was done to ease his burden. Then a month ago the family moved back to their own home in Soldier but "Cricket" was never able to be out with his many friends in the community he loved so well. It would be hard for us to recall the hundreds of fine things Conrad has done for his community in general. He served willingly on the boards of Soldier Lutheran Church, the Town Council, the School Board, and on many of the committees, etc. He served his jobs well, never asking for anything other than his own self-satisfaction that he was doing something for someone else. He operated Evenson's Store from 1928 to 1948, taking over from his father, Martin, was passed away at about the same age. Connie was then just out of high school. He operated the store successfully, and then in 1948 sold it to Andy Ballantyne so he could take things a little easier. Connie was one of the finest athletes the Soldier community has known, second probably to his son, Richard. He was tops in both basketball and baseball and after he became a "has-been" he never lost interest in local sports. It was a great joy for him to see his son develop into a fine athlete. The community will never forget Conrad—for one never forgets a true friend. Funeral services will be held at Soldier Lutheran Church this Thursday, June 13, at 2:00 o'clock with Pastor John C. Kilde officiating. Burial will be in Soldier Valley Cemetery under the direction of Oldham Funeral Home. Conrad Evenson, the son of Martin and Anna Evenson, was born at Soldier, Iowa, August 12, 1907 and passed away June 11, 1957 at the age of 49 years, nine months and 29 day. Conrad was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended the Soldier Public School, graduating in 1927. He was united in marriage to Alvina Hanson of Blencoe, Iowa, on February 27, 1932. To this union two children were born, Richard and Margaret. Conrad took over his father's mercantile business at the time of his father's death and continued until the spring of 1948. The family moved to Lincoln in 1955, and returned to Soldier in May, 1957 Conrad took part in many of the activities of the community, serving on the Town Council, school board, and as a church officer. He was a fine citizen, an exceptionally good friend and neighbor, and above all, a devoted husband and father. His loss to the community and to his family will indeed be great, and his good deeds and fine character will always be remembered. He is survived by his wife, Alvina; one son, Richard, and one daughter, Margaret; his mother, Mrs. Anna Evenson of Soldier; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Moore of Mapleton and Mrs. Gladys Kroll of Ute; two brother, Loyd of Hollywood, Calif., and Martin of Onawa. Pallbearers will be Arnold Britton, Page Carlson, Maurice Graetz, Donald Halverson, Omar Nelson and John Wade.
