Description	:	Conrad Eckhardt was born in Frank, Russia. He was the son of Johann Heinrich Eckhardt and Maria Katharina Schmidt. Conrad married Catharina Margareth Walter in January 1906. A year later they immigrated to the United States and first settled in Redfield, North Dakota. In 1909 they moved to Odessa, Washington. There were nine children born to this marriage: Amalie, Theodore, Alma, Emma, Esther, Martha, Ruth Loretta, Lydia Deborah, and Dorothea Maria Eckhardt. Conrad was a carpenter by trade, and his talent was most evident in the building of the United Church of Odessa, as it was known in 1949 "Funeral services were held here on Wednesday afternoon from the UCC for Con H. Eckhardt, 65, pioneer builder and civic worker, who died Saturday while attending a church conference at Paul, Idaho. The Rev E J Eslinger, who was also at the convention, returned home for the service, and will continue on to the general conference to be held at Scottsbluff, NE, this week, by airplane. Pallbearers included John Hopp, Jr., H.H. Scheller, Conrad Gies, Conrad Hopp, Jacob Quast and Mayor John Scrupps. Members of the city council attended in a body. Music was brought by a quartet, including Paul and Harold Hoefel, Clarence Frieske and William Went. In a German song the group was joined by Rev Eslinger. Born in Russia, April 2, 1886, Mr. Eckhardt was married there to Miss Katie Walter, and came to the United States 45 years ago. He entered the building business, as a contractor, employing many Odessa men while active in this trade. The most recent large structure which he supervised was the building of the United Congregational church, from which his services were conducted. He built the Odessa city hall, first city water tank, city swimming pool, elevators and many homes in Odessa, as well as grain elevators and other buildings in towns throughout the district. Since retiring from active operations of his business, he has served with the city council, and on Monday of last week was installed for another two year term. He lent his building knowledge to operations of the water department, and in a uniform sidewalk grading plan for the town. He had left here on Tuesday, with Mrs. Eckhardt, as part of a large group attending the church conference in Idaho, and had planned to go on to Nebraska. The group arrived at Paul on Friday afternoon, and death came to Mr. Eckhardt Saturday afternoon. Those who were with Mr. Eckhardt at the meeting stated that he had been active that day in the business session, and had made a motion for the group to consider. As he sat down he became distressed. Members of the group took him to the church yard, and a respirator from the Paul fire department was used in a vain effort to revive him. Mr. and Mrs. John Hopp Jr. and Rev Eslinger accompanied Mrs. Eckhardt home on Sunday, driving the Eckhardt car back. The body was shipped home in care of the State Funeral Home. This firm had charge of the funeral services, with burial in the Odessa Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Katie, at the home; one son Ted W. Eckhardt, Odessa; six daughters, Mrs. Alma Field, East End, Saskatchewan, Canada; Mrs. Emma Paulsen, Spokane; Mrs. Esther Becker, Harrington; Mrs. Ruth Cluckey, Spokane; Mrs. Lydia Bischoff, Harrington; and Mrs. Dorothy Finney, Spokane; 17 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and one brother, George Eckhardt, of Walla Walla. All the children but one were here for the service, Mrs. Alma Field of Canada being unable to come." (Odessa Record: 6-14-1951)
