Description	:	Conrad Henry Roehrkasse was born Dec. 11, 1842 at Kallhagen, Schaumburg Lippe, Germany. At the age of 20 years he immigrated to the United States and came to Ft. Wayne, Indiana, where he remained six years. Here he was married to Caroline Witte. To this union were born eight children, 5 sons and 3 daughters. In 1868, he came to Seward County, Nebraska and took a homestead southeast of Seward, on which he lived to the end of his life. Those were hard years of pioneer life for the early settlers. But from the very first... Read More	Conrad Henry Roehrkasse was born Dec. 11, 1842 at Kallhagen, Schaumburg Lippe, Germany. At the age of 20 years he immigrated to the United States and came to Ft. Wayne, Indiana, where he remained six years. Here he was married to Caroline Witte. To this union were born eight children, 5 sons and 3 daughters. In 1868, he came to Seward County, Nebraska and took a homestead southeast of Seward, on which he lived to the end of his life. Those were hard years of pioneer life for the early settlers. But from the very first Conrad was also concerned for the spiritual welfare of himself and his family. And there were others of the same mind. The deceased was instrumental in bringing about a church organization, he being chosen as a reader until a pastor was called in 1872. Great was their joy when they were able to dedicate their new church, which for many years was generally known as the "Stone Church" at Middle Creek. Since 1896, the deceased was a member of St. John Lutheran Church here at Seward. During all this time he proved to be a true Christian, regular in his church attendance and always in favor of everything tending to the glory of God and the welfare of the church. March 18, 1914, the deceased sustained a great loss when his wife died. She had been of one mind with him in bringing up their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord and in every way proved to be a true helpmate to him. When the deceased took sick about a year ago it reminded him of his coming end and he welcomed the same. But when the Lord tarried, it became apparent that the faith of the deceased was not only human sentiment, but a God-given conviction. Patiently he bore his cross until the Lord delivered him from all evil by taking him Home. He died July 21, 1920 at the age of 77 years, 7 months and 11 days. He leaves to mourn his death five sons: Henry of Wyoming; Fred, William, Louis and Theodore of this county; three daughters: Mary (Mrs. Wm. Brandt), Louise (Mrs. Louis Brandt), Caroline (Mrs. John Hodde), 3 daughters-in-law, 24 grandchildren and one great grandchild, besides other relatives and friends. The remains were laid to rest in Greenwood cemetery July 24, 1920 after a short service at home and a church service at St. John's.
