Conrad John Vaplon was born October 2, 1911, in Grant Township, rural Lidgerwood, North Dakota, the son of Frank and Ida Fischer Vaplon. He attended area schools and farmed with his family. Vaplon, 85, San Diego, died March 25, 1997, at his home. Conrad John Vaplon was born October 2, 1911, in Grant Township, rural Lidgerwood, North Dakota, the son of Frank and Ida Fischer Vaplon. He attended area schools and farmed with his family. His father died when he was 12 years old. On Oct 2, 1939, he married neighbor Irene Gully at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Lidgerwood. They lived on the Vaplon family farm until retirement in 1984 when they moved to San Diego. In 1976, Conrad received an honorary degree for being an Outstanding Agriculturalist from North Dakota State University---he grew certified seed grain and raised registered Duroc swine. In 1979, he received the Wyndmere Crop Show Distinguished Service Award. Conrad was a member of both St. Boniface, Lidgerwood and St. Michael's Catholic Church, Poway, actively participating as an usher and in many other capacities. A charter member and Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus in Lidgerwood and served as the first Faithful Navigator of the newly formed Fourth Degree Assembly. In 1967, Conrad was named Knight of the Year for the state of North Dakota. Conrad enjoyed being active in his communities. His many involvements included being 4-H leader for 13 years, charter member of the Lidgerwood Camera Club, serving on the board of directors for First National Bank from 1969 to 1976 and president of the Lidgerwood School Board. Conrad was president of the Richland County School Board in 1972. From 1973 to 1975, Conrad served as one of the directors of the Community Emergency Medical Service, was a crop improvement director, on the community development board and was vice president for Dakota Estates. Conrad was involved in local building projects, serving on the building committee for Lidgerwood Public School and for Dakota Estates. After moving to San Diego, Conrad remained active as a member of the local Poway Valley Garden Club and was chairman of Poway Lake Rose Garden. At age 80, he received the best of show award at Poway Valley Garden & Flower Show. He and wife Irene enjoyed photography as a hobby. Together they photographed weddings and other local events. As a couple, they were active in various square dance groups in both the Lidgerwood and San Diego areas. In 1985, they donated the Grant Township country school to the Lidgerwood City Museum. Through the years, Conrad and his family planted hundreds of trees in the Lidgerwood area. Many of the trees being enjoyed today at the Lidgerwood Golf Course, pool park, city park, Calvary Cemetery and at private homes. Conrad and Irene are charter members of the Bagg Bonanza Historical Farm. Two rooms of the main house have been dedicated in their honor. Conrad is survived by his wife Irene, six children, seventeen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; one brother Lawrence and two sisters Agatha and Anne all three of Lidgerwood, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Frances Kohoutek and an infant granddaughter Phyllis Vaplon. (Provided by: Gregory Dorr #47094346)
