Williamsburg Journal Tribune - Thursday, July 21, 1938 - Conrad Burck, a long time citizen of Pilot township, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly from a heart attack Friday evening just a few minutes after he had retired for the night at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Will Septer, with whom he and Mrs. Burck have made their home for about three years. Mr. Burck was born October 3, 1859 in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, where he was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith. At the age of eighteen he was graduated from college and then entered the army where he served three years and was chosen an officer. At the age of twenty-one he left for the United States and upon his arrival received employment with the C.B.0. Railroad Co. for about six years when he left to accept a position as shipping cleric for the Hammond Packing company, where he worked for a period of twenty years. In October, 1886, he was united in marriage to Minnie Roggentine and the couple had celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1930, two years ago. In 1901 he, with his family, moved on the farm in West Pilot on which he lived until his severe illness about three years ago, when they went to live with their daughter. Preceding Mr. Burck in death were one daughter Katie, who died in infancy, and a grandson, Hay Septer, who died eleven years ago. He leaves to mourn his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Will Septer of Pilot; two sons, Louis of Millersburg and Carl of Mt. Vernon; and six grandchildren: Harold Septer, Ralph Burck, Luella Burck Weiss, Lucy, Kathleen and Margaret Anne Burck; and one great granddaughter, Helen Septer. Funeral services were held at the Zion's Reformed church Sunday afternoon at two o'clock in charge of the pastor, Rev. John Schlamp. The hymns, "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," "Rock of Ages," and "We're Going Down the Valley," were sung by Mrs. Russell Davis and Mrs. Charles Goettsch. Burial was made in the adjoining cemetery with Will Faas, John Wiedemeier, Timmie Donohoe, John Goettsch, Fred Guehrn and C.W. Smith bearing the body to its last resting place. Those attending the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Carl Burck of Mount Vernon, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Butler and son John, a daughter Mrs. Lucy Simpkafitz of Cedar Rapids, Raymond Dunn of Oxford, Mrs. Mary Tuomey, Donald and Elmer Dunn of Parnell, Tommy Kelly, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Belger and two children of Iowa City, Mrs. Belger of Holbrook, Olga Schultz and Bill Sheeler of Cedar Rapids.
