They had 3 children: Mrs. Barbara Margaret Markle, Conrad Jr. Meister and Mrs. Anna T. Wolfe. Barbara died young at 37. After Barbara died in 1861, he sent for her sister Susanna Bachman, in Switzerland, to join the family. He married her March 04, 1862 in Keokuk, Lee Co., IA. They had 4 children together. The Gate City: August 15, 1900 SUMMONED BEYOND --------------------- Conrad Meister, an old Citizen died Yesterday. ---------------------- HE HAD BEEN ILL FOR A YEAR ---------------------- Was one of the Best Known Men in the City and He Was Well Liked by All. ---------------------- Yesterday morning at 5:15 o'clock at his home, 1726 Exchange street, occurred the death of Conrad Meister, one of the oldest and most lighly respected citizens of Keokuk. He was seventy years of age and death came after an illness lasting for over a year. ....A year ago last December Mr. Meister contracted a sever cold. At his advanced years his vitality was not of sufficient strength to overcome the cold. He had been confined to his bed about a year with the complaint which gradually wore his life away. ....Conrad Meister was born in Zurich, Benken, Switzerland, March 14, 1830, and consequently he was at the time of his death seventy years and five months old. The first twenty-four years of his life were spent in his native village in Switzerland. In 1854 he left his mother country and came to America, settling first in St. Louis, Mo. He lived in that city until 1857 when he came to Keokuk. He did not take up his residence in this city but bought property near Mooar, Iowa, where he conducted a truck farm for many years. ...................A THRIFTY MAN. ....He followed this vocation successfully up until about six years ago, when he retired His garden near Mooar, consisting of twenty acres was still owned by him up until the time of his dissolution. In this city he spent his life quietly in retirement which he had justly earned. ....In 1856 he was marriage to Barbara Bachman in the city of St. Louis. She came with him to this city and in 1863 she was called home by her Creator. Some time after the death of his wife he married that woman's sister, Susan Bachman, who also passed into the land of the unknown years ago. ....His Marriages were blessed with the following surviving children: Mrs. Christian Mackley of Spring Prairie, Iowa, Conrad Meister Jr. of Mooar, Mrs. Charles Wolfed of this city, Miss Louise Meister, of this city and John Meister of Mooar, Besides a brother Christian Meister of Mooar, he leaves sixteen grandchildren to grieve over his demise. ................A GENTLEMAN. ....As a gentleman Mr. Meister's character and good standing was disputed by no one. He was thrifty, honest and affable and led an exemplary life. Through his many good qualities he gained many steadfast friends to whom the news of his death comes as a painful shock. ....He was an ardent christian and was for many years affiliated with St. Paul's German Evangelical church. ....Arrangements as to the funeral have net yet been completed.
