Source: History of Brown County, Ohio, pages 459-460: Conrad Metzger entered Lewis Township in 1798 with his wife and first two children, Samuel and Barbara. Conrad was born in New Jersey in 1772 and raised in Pennsylvania where he married Margaret, daughter of Charles Baum. On coming to Brown county (via Chillicothe, Ross County), he first settled on the farm now owned by John. W. Hook, where he cleared twenty acres in two years. In 1800 he purchased 100 acres of unbroken timber land, a part of the farm now owned by Joseph Metzger, and soon had a little cabin erected and corn patch cleared. Buck-skin was the chief article of rainment until deer became scarce, when flax was introduced as a substitute. Mr Metzger accumulated property until he had 600 acres, earned by severe toil and strict economy. Both he and his wife were members of the Christian Church. He died in 1864, age 92 years, she in 1853, age seventy-nine years. Of their nine children, three are now living. Came to Brown County, Ohio with wife and two children Samuel and Barbara around 1798. I would have wrote to you before now but I have had no chance since I heard where you lived, but I understand that you are in a poor part of the world and I think it does not suit you for younever liked to work so well as to work for nothing. This is the character of your Slippery Rock in our country, but it may be that this country bears as bad a name with you as yours with us, but Cousin George, I will tell you the truth about this country as nigh as I can. There is some parts of it that is some sickly along large creeks where the fogg is apt to be very thick. Other places is again that is as healthy as any part in the United States for we have been in this country these 18 years and we have nither fever nor Agy, and for raisen grane there can be no better land. I have 26 acres of wheat now on shucks, one field 12 acres it has 655 dozen on theother is not counted as to give you an exanct account of it but is allowed it would turn off as much as the other. Mister Vandike helped to reap it and he says he never rept better. I expect to have between 6 and 7 bushels of wheat this season and I have 20 acres of corn. I have 200 and 25 acres of land 60 acres clear 200 apple trees, some other good fruit trees peaches, cherrys and plumbs. I live one mile and a half from the Ohio River 40 miles above Cincinnati where the greatest Steem mill is that is in America. It is nine stories high four pearof bins in her eight feet over where the highest proce is always paid for wheat. Wheat is now 76 cents per bushels corn 33 !/2 per bushel Salt one dollar whiskey 75 cents per gallon. Both were natives of Germany, and both Lutherans. The same year, Conrad Metzger entered the township, with his wife and two children, Samuel and Barbara.
