From Story County Watchman August 11, 1893 THE WORST.--Sunday evening word was brought to Sheriff Ashford that there was a bad state of affairs at the residence of Chas. Hall in the north west part of the city. He at once started to the scene of disaster and soon it was known that in a drunken carousal three parties were about dead or already so. Con. Leonard was lying near the stove dead while Chas. Simmons was erect in a chair so near dead that he was already getting rigid while Chas. Hall was found across a bed in about the same state. They were at once cared for and the stomach pump brought into requisition withthe result saving the two latter who were brought down town and lodged in jail for the balance of the night. The remains of Con. Leonard were taken to the undertaking establishment of Briggs & Hammond and Monday they were buried in the Nevada Cemetery. Monday the other parties were brought before Major Worsley who gave them fine and imprisonment, whereupon Hall in accordance with law gave information where and how the liquor was obtainted implicating a druggist in Boone as the party. Steps were at once taken to see what could be done in the matter. In the mean time the liquor will be analyzed to see what poison was in the liquor which caused the resulting death in such short time and from the limited amount used. Excitement ran high about 9 o'clock Sunday night while the physicians were working with the two patients whom it was thought could be saved and much comment was made as to the workings of the law which made such an act possible. From Story County Watchman August 11, 1893 [DIED--]On Sunday evening Con. Leonard, aged about 40 years. He has lived in this city for more than 20 years and for a good portion of the time has worked at the barber business. The remains were laid to rest in the Nevada Cemetery Monday.
