The group enjoyed the day at the Pierce County Fair, and felt that they had a very happy birthday. Mr. Aubert is a native of Switzerland, where he spent the first twenty years of his life, and also where he learned the bakers trade. When he was twenty years old he went to France, and there secured employment on the railroad. He stayed there about two years and then returned to Switzerland. About that time an aunt of his received a letter from her son who lived at Creighton, Nebr., and that letter gave Mr. Aubert the desire to come to America. Soon after he started for America and in 1884 he came to Creighton where his cousin, whom he had never seen resided. Mr. Aubert worked on a farm near Creighton, and later took an 80-acre homestead 2 ½ miles southeast of Verdigre. He proved up the homestead and in 1887 he went to Omaha where he worked for a stockman foreman for three years. In 1892 he was employed as section foreman at Verdigre. In 1893 he went to Plainview as section foreman and was there until 1900, when he was transferred to Niobrara. In 1914 he was tendered the position as road master for the Chicago and Northwestern railroad from Norfolk to Winner, S.D., with headquarters at Norfolk. He resigned this position in 1916 as he felt his living expenses away from home were too great. He then returned to Niobrara as section foreman and remained there until 1921 when he came to Pierce. He retired September 1, 1933 on a pension after 40 years of service as section foreman on the Western Lines of the Chicago and Northwestern railway. In 1895 Mr. Aubert was married to Edith Ellwood, who died shortly after they moved to Pierce. He has since his wife's death lived with his children, most of the time with his son Marvin and family. There are six children, namely, Mrs. Ted Bals of California; Mrs. Walter Nihart, Crofton; Mrs. James Silhacek, Mrs. Donald Turek, Marvin and Virgil, all of Pierce. There are twelve grandchildren. Both sons, Marvin and Virgil have always worked on the section. Marvin, who has his birthday the same day as his father, is a Pierce baseball fan. He ahs been a member of the Pierce league for several years. Roland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Aubert is quite a favorite of his grandfather. He is eight years old and is in the third grade. Baseball is his greatest sport, but he also likes to play cowboy.
