Constance Irene Gilbertson Sassmann Rod, born April 30, 1923 in Chapin, Iowa, to Thelma Pearl Ruble and Stanley Oliver Gilbertson, passed away Thursday, February 2, 2012 at her home in Banning, CA. Connie graduated from Denver High School, Denver, IA in 1941. Connie married Floyd William Sassmann of Denver, Iowa on February 15, 1942 and lived most of her life in the Denver, Iowa area. Connie worked as a waitress at Oberheu's Restaurant in Waverly, IA for fourteen years, and as the owner and operator of the restaurant from 1970 until 1981, when poor health demanded her retirement. Connie was a board member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Denver, IA., where she was an active member of the quilting group, taught Sunday school, bible school, and served on the mission Committee. Connie was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, where she served as Chaplin, secretary and president. She was a reporter for the local papers, volunteered at the local nursing homes, hospital, Red Cross, Hospice volunteer, board member of Mitchell Manor, and Teamster Union retiree's club member. Connie is survived by her son Stanley W. Sassmann of Banning, CA (Cindy Sassmann), her daughter Rebecca Sassmann Winegarner of Rochester, WA (Steven), seven grandchildren; Michael Sassmann of Lompoc, CA, Mitzi Sassmann Figgins of Redlands, CA, Dawn Sassmann Kelly of Lamoni, IA, Theresa Sassmann DuBois of Orlando, FL, Heather Fink of Shelton, WA, Shelly Harris of Virginia Beach, VA, and Matthew Sassmann of Kennesaw, GA, as well as seven great-grandchildren; Justin Sassmann, Caitlin Thoms, Jaclynn Thoms, Catheryn Thoms, Angelica Sassmann, Hanna Figgins, Jacob Figgins, Madeline Harris, and Margot Harris. Connie is preceded in death by her first husband, Floyd William Sassmann, her second husband Marvin Rod, both of her parents, her three brothers, and her son Rodney Sassmann. Memorial services will be held June 16th, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at St Paul United Church of Christ, 300 Washington St., Denver, Iowa, with Rev. Craig R. Henderson officiating. Burial will be held in Fairview Cemetery in Denver, following the memorial service. There will be no public visitation, her body has been cremated. Memorial donations may be directed to Hospice or St. Paul United Church of Christ in Denver, Iowa. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly is assisting the family.
