The body of Cooper Howell of the Belfast Community was recovered by the Goldsboro Rescue Squad after they had dragged the lake for more than five hours. Howell's brother, Robert Howell Jr., said the young man had gone hunting alone Saturday morning saying that he would be back around 3pm. At 6pm, he said, he and his father grew worried and set out in search for him. "We called the Quaker Neck plant and asked them to look for Cooper for us", Howell said. "We circled the back areas of the lake in vain and put out an alarm to the Sheriff's Department around 11pm." The surviving Howell brother remained on the scene of the tragedy from Saturday night until the body was found. When attempts of deputies to "holler up" the missing hunter failed, they called in the Rescue Squad who arrived on the scene at 2am with lighting equipment. The volunteers circled the backside of the lake and found Howell's clothing, boots, and gun placed neatly on the bank. His car was found parked outside a gate leading to the lake dikes. An empty shotgun shell was found near the man's clothing and dredging operations began at around 5:30am. At 10:40am Sunday morning, some 10 minutes after Howell's father, mother, wife, and sietr arrived, the body was hooked by a rescue boat team of Buddy Shaw and Ronnie Dale. Robert Howell, the victim's father, and the rest of the family were preparing to leave when the body was found. A graduate of Goldsboro High School, he was married to Mrs. Catherine Palmer Howell and the father of a small daughter, Theresa. Other survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Howell of the Patetown Community; one brother, Robert J. Howell Jr. of Rt. 2 Goldsboro; three sisters, Jannette and Phrates Howell of Rt. 2 Goldsboro and Annette Howell of Albany, NY; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hare of Saulston; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Lester Howell of Rt. Goldsboro. Funeral services were to be held at Stoney Creek Free Will Baptist Church by the Rev. Joseph Ingram. Burial was to be in the Howell family cemetery. Aiding in the search were members of the National Guard units from Fremont and Goldsboro. Game Warden Admiral Howell also offered services and equipment. The search efforts were coordinated by Rescue Squad First Lieutenant George Thompson who recently was elected captain. Capt. Frank Gordon of the Salvation Army served coffee and sandwiches to the rescue workers. Officials of Carolina Power and Light Co. provided portable heaters.
