Mrs. Cora McDowell was born Cora Arminta Smith, daughter of James O. and Arminta Smith, March 1, 1871, near Mount Pleasant, and spent her life in Henry county until she passed away after a long illness on March 31, 1950. She was united in marriage to John E. McDowell at Mount Pleasant, Iowa, on January 19, 1890. As a part of her schooling she attended Howes Academy in this city. She made confession of faith in Christ as a young woman. There were twelve children born to this union of John and Cora. Her husband and three small children preceded her in death. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Sid Forbes and Mrs. Effie Hummel of Mount Pleasant, and nine children, Mrs. Etna Frazer of Corning, California; Mahlon J. McDowell, Redding, California; Mrs. Gladys Barton, Los Angeles, California; Mrs. Cecil Choate, Marion, Illinois; Mrs. Hazel Darnell, Mt. Carroll, Illinois, Mrs. Leah Barton, Hillsboro, Iowa; Emmitt F. McDowell, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; Beryl V. McDowell, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; and Deryl D. McDowell, Fairfield, Iowa. There are thirty-one grandchildren and twenty-three great grandchildren.
