Description	:	Cora Belle (Smith) Briggs was born March 19, 1879 in Seward county, Nebr. She was the daughter of Norman Walter Smith and Susan Anderson Smith. Her mother died in the diptheria epidemic of 1879 (d. 2 Jan 1880), and Mrs. Briggs was raised by an aunt and uncle, the late Elizabeth Anderson Metz and John Metz. Read More	Cora Belle (Smith) Briggs was born March 19, 1879 in Seward county, Nebr. She was the daughter of Norman Walter Smith and Susan Anderson Smith. Her mother died in the diptheria epidemic of 1879 (d. 2 Jan 1880), and Mrs. Briggs was raised by an aunt and uncle, the late Elizabeth Anderson Metz and John Metz. At an early age, Mrs. Briggs became a member of the United Brethren Church at Seward and was very active in it until her marriage. She was for many years the church organist, and served as Sunday School Superintendent. Mrs. Briggs attended a session at York College and began teaching rural school on March 1, 1896. She taught for eighteen years in the rural schools of Seward County, and in Bee and Seward public schools. Working with the late W. H. Brokaw, then County Superintendent, she played a primary role in developing the early day corn shows...a forerunner of the4-H Clubs of today. On April 10, 1915, Cora Belle Smith and Samuel Perry Briggs were married at the Metz family home. They farmed the Briggs eighty, three miles west of Seward beside the City Wells, until 1941, when they moved to Staplehurst. Briggs died in April 1942. Two children were born to the couple, Cora Mae, and a son, Samuel Lewis, who died in September 1938, when a senior in Seward High School. Mrs. Briggs moved to Lincoln November 1, 1942, and has made her home in Lincoln with her daughter. For many years following WWII Mrs. Briggs was the chief cookie baker for the USO, before the USO closed. She was the recipient of the three-star recognition pin. At the time the United Brethren Church consolidated with Methodism, Mrs. Briggs joined the Fairhill Presbyterian Church in Lincoln. She was one of the last two remaining charter members of the Seward County Women's Club, which she helped organized in June 1916. After she moved to Lincoln she continued to attend the meetings in the Seward community. She die September 30, several days after a fall in the yard of her home. Mrs. Briggs is survived by her daughter, Cora Mae, Lincoln; a sister, Mrs. Mabel Metz Kirk of Seattle; two cousins, Mrs. Lila Smith Iverson of Seward and Mrs. Iva Smith Curtis of Hastings; nieces and nephews. Burial was October 1 at Anderson Cemetery west of Seward, with private graveside services conducted by Rev. J. Dallas Gibson of Fairhill Presbyterian Church, Lincoln.
