He had five brothers and five sisters: James S., Susan (Rumble), Rebecca(Poundstone), Affiant Henry, Davis, Calvin, Asable Elizabeth (Nelson), David, Mary (Sears Black), and Dorcas (Shelton). He moved to Marion Township, Fayette County, Ohio in November, 1860. He married Catherine W. Holland of Paint Township, Fayette County, Ohio. She was the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Holland, They had nine children: Eva Malinda, Frank S., Carrie E. M., Ollie C. E., Calvin H., Cora I., Mystle F. and a son and daughter who died as infants. His enlistment form indicates he was 5 feet 8 inches tall with light complexion, hazel eyes and dark hair. He enlisted in Company C, 20th Ohio Volunteer Infantry September 8, 1861 at Bloomingburg, Ohio when he was 23 years old. He was appointed Corporal on January 27, 1865. He was discharged July 15, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. The Medal of Honor was awarded to him on the 17th day of September 1897 for "Most distinguished gallantry at Vicksburg Miss. April 22, 1863, in volunteering and serving as one of the crew of a transport that was under very heavy fire in passing the forts at that place." Gen. Grant gave him a 30 day furlough for his valor. He was a Republican and served from 1873, until his death on May 9, 1919, as Treasurer of Bloomingburg Lodge No. 449 Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio. He died at his home near Bloomingburg at the age of 81, and is buried beside his wife at the Bloomingburg Cemetery. Bio from the Henry Casey Camp #92, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.
