Burnette, Sr., died at 8:30 p.m., Thursday at LaFollette Community Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Burnette owned and operated Powell's Valley Hardware for more than 50 years. Read More	From the LaFollette Press, Thursday, October 21, 1971: POWELL'S VALLEY HARDWARE PROPRIETRESS DIES Mrs. Cora Burnette, wife of the late W.F. Burnette, Sr., died at 8:30 p.m., Thursday at LaFollette Community Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Burnette owned and operated Powell's Valley Hardware for more than 50 years. She was a member of the LaFollette United Methodist Chuch. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. W.O. Stanton, present owner of Powell's Valley Hardware; four grandsons, Dr. Rand Burnette of Evansville, In., Jack Burnette of Wayne, N.J., and Carl Burnette of Austin, Tx.; six great-grandaughters; and six great-grandsons. "She was born in Jellico. Her parents were Mr. & Mrs. I.E. Wilson", said her daughter, Mrs. Stanton. "She attended school in Tennessee and married William Francis Burnette in 1876. In the beginning, he owned and operated LaFollette Hardware. Then, 55 years ago, he sold that out and opened up Powell's Valley Hardware. They had one daughter, me, and four sons, Carl, Dent, James, and W.F. Junior Burnette, all of whom are now deceased. I'm the only one left", Mrs. Stanton said. "My mother was a great lover of people and everything of beauty, especially flowers. You may not believe this, but she was a fine horseback rider", Mrs. Stanton added. "And, she was a wonderful pianist." "We spent our winters in Hollywood, Fla. for about 20 years. We had a nice home there. But after my mother broke her hip, we got so we couldn't go" Mrs. Stanton explained. "She was a member of the Eastern Star but she hadn't been able to go for years. She couldn't attend on account of her health for a long time. She was critically ill for ten months in the hospital before she died." Mrs. Stanton said. "While she was in the hospital, everybody always said she looked so sweet. I used to go up and fix her hair with rose ribbons and dress her in a rose and pink chiffon gowns. She was a wonderful conversationalist, and everybody liked to come by and talk to her and see how nice she looked." Mrs. Stanton said. "Rose was her favorite color" she added. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at LaFollette United Methodist Church by the Rev. Ogleva Street. Active pall bearers were Richard Sharp, Floyd Shipwash, Sam Claiborne, Russ Claiborne, Bill Claiborne, Eugene Childs, Jack Alexander, and Al Morton. Businessmen of LaFollette were honorary pall bearers. Roach Mortuary, LaFollette, was in charge of arrangements.
