Read More	The Athens Messenger Monday, November 6, 1944 Norris Baby Asphyxiated as Fire Destroys Trailer Child, Rescued by Mother, Dies on Way Into Athens Rescued by his mother from a burning automobile trailer home, 15-months-old Corbin Eddy Norris, son of Mr. and Mrs. Corbin Norris, of near Chase, Alexander Township, died last night about 10 o'clock while being brought to Athens. Efforts to resuscitate the baby, by use of the inhalator at Athens city Hall, were unsuccessful. Coroner A.L. Pritchard said that death was due to asphyxiation. Mrs. Norris, the former Gladys McGrath, and her three children lived in the trailer across the road from the farm home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Aaron McGrath. Mr. Norris is employed in a shipyard at San Francisco. According to Sheriff George Bateman, who investigated, the mother and youngest daughter, Betty, age 4, had left the baby alone for a few moments while they went to the McGrath home to get an older daughter, Bertha, age 8. Trailer in flames After they had entered the McGrath home, Bateman said, Mrs. Norris, glancing out a window toward the trailer, noticed a pecular light there. She ran to the trailer and found it in flames. Entering, she rescued the baby, and she and Mr. McGrath came to Athens in the McGrath car. At the Athens Fire Department, Harry Dalton and his son, Lieut. Charles Dalton, here on leave, and Harry Risley used the inhalator in an unsuccessful effort to revive the baby. Bateman said that apparently an oil lamp in the trailer had upset, causing the fire. Later a gasoline stove exploded. The trailer was destroyed, with all the possessions of the Norris family. Others in the family Survivors, besides the parents, two sisters, and the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Norris, Canaanville Road. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Jagers Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Gerald Pirkey, and burial will be made at Graham Chapel. Friends may call at the funeral home at any time.
