OBITUARY THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Tuesday, August 3, 1965 MAY DeBOK May DeBok, oldest daughter of Jacob and Emma Shilling, was born in Marion county October 17, 1878, and passed away July 18, 1965, at the age of 86 years, nine months and one day. She had been a bed patient since March 17 when she fell in her home in Chariton breaking her hip. On July 5, she was stricken with a heart attack at Riggs Nursing Home and passed away at the Yocom hospital. On April 17, 1898 she was united in marriage to Charles A. DeBok, they missed by one day of having their 66th anniversary together. She was preceded in death by her husband April 16, 1964, her parents, two small daughters, two sisters, Gertie Karr and Grace Ballard. Sister Grace had made her home with her for 18 months. She leaves to mourn seven children: Mrs. Charles (Thelma) Surbaugh of Roswell, N. Mex.; Mrs. Glenn (Beulah) Beaty, Mrs. Kenneth (Ruth) Boothe and Walker DeBok of Chariton; Herman, Harold and Carroll of Russell; 21 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren, one sister, Maude Riherd of Belle Plaine, Ia.; and two brothers, Roy and Lloyd Shilling of Knoxville, Ia.; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends and neighbors. She was a faithful member of the E.U.B. Church, having worked in her church until the sickness of her husband when she was unable to attend services. She loved her Bible having read it through three times. She was a loving mother and grandmother and was always in readiness when called up. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 21, 1965, at the Beardsley-Fielding Funeral Home. The Rev. V. E. Shickell officiated at the services. Six grandsons served as pallbearers. Intement was in the Bethel cemetery.
